my friend makes well over 1k hp with stock suspension and DSS axles. he tried coilovers, then stock leafs with adj shocks and now he is back to stock suspension.

The real question is, can you handle 1000 hp? Save your $, start with the stock suspension, and see if it limits you. Most likely it won't prevent you from reaching your goal if your car is setup right. It will also save you a great deal of time, money, and frustration on the strip.
