2nd gear grind TR6060 MGW
Since purchasing the car I have been noticed an issue that the transmission locks 2nd gear out at high RPMs. At low RPM and normal shifting the transmission shifts normally, however at a high rpm shift from 1st-2nd gear it will grind. Also a 3rd to 2nd downshift at high rpm will grind. It doesn't matter how fast or slow you try to engage the gear, it will grind if the engine is at high RPM. The car had an MGW in it since I purchased it but was otherwise stock. I'm not sure what generation it is or whether or not it has the billet box. OEM clutch, stock power output until 500 miles ago. I have changed the clutch fluid numerous times using the ranger method and that helps with pedal feel but does not resolve the 2nd gear issue. All other gears are fine.

I have a similar 1-2 lockout of 2nd gear at WOT. The problem started after the blower was installed. Flushing the clutch fluid seemed to be a temporary fix. I have an OEM slave and McLeod RXT. The car has 12k miles on it and only ~2k miles on the clutch.
I have the redesigned GM master cylinder sitting on my work bench. I'm hoping replacing that and flushing the system fixes it.
I don't do much high RPM drops from 3rd into 2nd so I'm not sure we have the same problem.

What year is your car? Mine is an 08. A forum search pulled up some posts from years back of owners having grinding issues but no real resolution from what I can find. The car had the master cylinder replaced under warranty around 2010. When was the updated version released? What shifter do you have?
I don't know if it is clutch related or something internal in the transmission causing the issue.

Since it is a 2010 TR6060, it doesn't have the updated carbon fiber blocker rings on the 2nd gear synchronizer. I'd be willing to bet that the sintered bronze blocker is damaged/burned, and isn't grabbing like it should. Unfortunately, this will require the trans to be completely disassembled to replace a $75 part.

Are you better off getting a completely rebuilt trans from a shop like RPM or just having the 2nd gear synchro replaced? What is average labor for the repair? Thanks

Which part of that quote are you referring to?
You might be best off calling RPM or RKT56 to see what they think...It will really depend on what they find when the trans is pulled apart. Labor rate will depend on if you pull the trans yourself, or not. It may be worth upgrading several of the other blockers to carbon as well, so you don't have to do this again anytime soon.
You should also make sure that you clutch is disengaging correctly. Even if you have bled the hydraulics, it could still be hanging up.
Also, you have to make sure that you rev match when downshifting. Forcing the synchronizers to match a downshift, without blipping the throttle, is very hard on them.

If you have low miles on the car, I would rebuild it.

Any theories why my grinding went away for several hundred miles swapping the fluid in the clutch master reservoir? Maybe I need to do some more testing after another fluid change.

The carbon blocking rings (just for 2nf gear) came on late 2011 and 2012 up models. Here is a side by side comparison.

The original poster's symptom suggest it's an internal transmission issue. If you fixed the issue by changing the clutch fluid, it could have been hydraulic issue. I try to give you guys my best professional opinion but without having the car, it's still a guess.

Is the pricing on your site for rebuilding a tr6060 that the customer supplies? Or is it for a rebuilt trans + core charge? What is the average turn around time for a rebuild?

I had the same issue and decided to rebuild the trans. The trans needed a few gears and synchro assemblies. Majority of the engagement teeth had been knocked off. I am no expert but I believe this was caused by poor clutch disengagement and forceful quick shifting.

If your shifter is faster than your left leg you could do damage to your transmission. Not a real big fan aftermarket shifters for me to stock and works great.
