My 11 is closing on 25k miles and I'm tempted to open it up to have a look.

If you're talking about pulling the valve covers to conduct a valve guide inspection, and this would be your first look at them...I would encourage you to do so.

i have pulled mine to inspect and correct me if im wrong, but there is NEVER any play whatsoever in the valves when testing the guides.

any momevent side to side (left -right)=BAD
no movement side to side=GOOD (for now) LOL

Just to be clear, ANY movement is bad, but specifically, due to side-loading of the stock rockers, 99% of the wear is in the "up / down" direction, from intake to exhaust, not "left to right" or "side to side".

Guides wear from revs and hard driving. Mine were BAD after 18k miles from pre owners who didn't know better, so i just had them replaced.
Like Dan says, not side-to-side, but up and down since the rocker is actually not 100% pushing DOWN on the valve. A friend just put a mechanical cam + lifters in his LS7, and its amazing how extremely bad the stock rockers work when you throw a big lift cam. Let me know if you want pictures.

GM was really stressing it, using whats basically LS3 rockers on a cam that lifts a bit more.

Those retainers look just like mine What lifters did you go with? I am basically doing the same to my motor as you right now. Checking everything over, 4.130" pistons, rod bolts, etc. My LS7 lifters have some scuffs on the wheels so I will replace them.

Ls7 lifters is what they said at Reher Morrison, so that's what I went with. Johnsons are good next build right now I just want to drive it....tuning next week...

Make sure you get new lifters I did.....kept crank cryo froze it its good for 900hp so I might do forced induction or a little something something's.....haaaa
