Default Tire size debate

I have 19's on rear. Looking to go with the Mickey Thompson EE Street SS for a drag radial.

My concern is which size.

285/35/18 Stock (which is a hair taller than the stock run flats)

26.7 vs 26.9

305/35/18 (which is about 3/4in taller 27.4)

Only concern with the 305 is would you think my shifts be off on my tune from the height difference dramatically

Going over 27 has the potential to rub the liners, YMMV.

Jaycajun on here has the 305s and says they fit nice. I also was reading that over 27in could cause rubbing.

My concern with the 285 was the bite of the tire. I have never owned a drag radial and even though it's about the same size height of my stock tire I would expect to be a night and day difference?

I have the cray brickyard 19x11 tears with Mickey Thompson 325/30/19 on them and they hook great 671 to the wheels

I'm not sure what power you are putting down but night and day difference is a under statement. Even with 285's it will hook. You will be surprised how much harder the car pulls with traction

305 will fit great, mounted on a same type wheel it's approx 5/8 inch wider, does not stick out of wheel well much more than stock tires, and will dead hook with a decent burn out. No rubbing at all. The only issue I had was Discount Tire had 8oz of weight on one tire and 6oz on the other one. A visual representation is the size of a brick. I politely refused to accept them and they spent a long time trying to get them to balance by breaking them down and spinning them. In the end they still needed a lot of weights on each tire. I feel a slight vibration on the highway and I am sure it's the balancing. Only use them for drag strip so I can deal with it. Others have reported zero issues, so it could have just been set slightly out of round set. Ultimately you need to decide what your goal is. Hooking with high hp get mickeys, or Nittos for highway enjoyment and accept they may not dead hook if you drag race.

Here is a comparison of stock Pilot Super Sport 285/35/R19 vs Mickey Thompson 305/35/R19:

285 width is 10 5/8"

305 width is 11 1/16"

285 height is 26 7/8"

305 height is 27 1/4"

View of 285

View of 305

View of weights for Mickeys....not ideal but it's what had to be done...

I'm running the stock size M/T SS Radials, 285/35R19. They really aren't hooking any better than the MPSS did new. Also, these tires apparently are about 1" taller than the MPSS in the same size. My speedo is off 2mph, confirmed by the GPS in my RD & phone.

Waiting on my order for the new Michelin AS4 tires for the rear. After 3,000 on the M/Ts, there's no way I'd drive these dedicated on the street anymore.

What did you not like about them? I'm putting down anywhere from 650-700rwhp right now.

They feel loose at speed. Under WOT they make the car push like it wants to change lanes and has a bit of wiggle. Coming back from drag week, I got caught in a down pour and almost looped it doing about 45 mph. All that for the same 60' times as the stock runflat MPSS.

I had Nitto 555Rs on my truck and never experienced any of these problems. I also drove it in rain and snow without any issues; controlling my speed and acceleration, of course.

And I see I wrote the wrong tires. I'm getting the Michelin 4S.

P305/35R19 Nitto NT05R

no computer trouble around 600whp 7 speed manual, drove fine.

most often the unsettled driving feel is a result of run flats on the front with a non-run flat in the rear... but can be caused by wide front tires in general.

Is your rear wheels the same width as stock z51 wheels?
