Melting Slicks
My hope is the Jalopnik sketches are one of many design exercises in an attempt to study a spectrum of options a bit earlier in the design process & they discarded many of the things we see in the sketch and/or simple came up with better options, an evolution of design. For sure, seldom does a design come out perfect in all aspects & my hope is what we are seeing is not the final product. Remember, the entire design cycle of a car can happen in a much shorter time thus a lot of sketches, models, etc can be produced, modified or outright changed quicker.
As I write this, I am trying to convince myself GM is coming up with something better than a Camaro rear end slapped onto a Corvette.
I don't like it on the Camaro, and I sure as Hell won't like it on the C7.

That might be true for a metal panel . . . But the plastic material used on the Corvette is simple to change.

"The double bubbles over the taillights were gone, too. The clinic hadn't liked them that much and the engineers knew that a flattened surface offered less wind resistance."

I don't know if any of you guys remember jujube, but he posted this photoshopped image on 3/13/03 before any of the spy pics came out.
I don't remember what his story was, but he claimed to have inside info on what the C6 looked like, and he was right.

There's nothing wrong with taillights being used to maintain family resemblance.
Where did Corvette's iconic taillights come from?
The first Chevies to have a pair/trio of circular taillights were...
...the 1958 Chevrolet sedans, coupes, and wagons.
They next appeared on the 1959 Sting Ray Racer. From that one-off custom-bodied racer, they were taken and applied to...
...the 1959 Corvair. But right after that, they showed up on...
...the entire 1960 Chevrolet model line, except the Corvette.
Then the 1961 Corvette got a new "ducktail," and finally got "Corvette taillights."
I like the C6 taillights. I like the Camaro taillights. I don't like the rear of the Jalopnik illustration (which only superficially looks Camaro-esque). The taillights are fussy and misshapen, and now we know who bought all the mascara from the Amy Winehouse estate sale. And it's slabsided in a way that suggests a step back from C6 to C5, only worse. But I don't worry too much, because it's just an illustration, and illustrations distort perception.
And if C7's taillights look like they've moved toward the Camaro design relative to C6's almost-circular afterburners, I won't think of it as Corvette copying its cheaper younger brother. I'll think of it as another evolution of a Chevrolet family trademark.

Since it's time for an upgrade and I like the Jalopnik illustration so much (yes.. love the rear lights) that I'm planning on buying one once the Chevy dealers end their initial sky rocket mark-ups.
