I bet they could come with a shift by wire system where you still have a "shifter" with a look and feel of a normal shifter connected to a transmission. I guess they would also have to do the same with the clutch.

While I do understand the yearnings and desires of the classic 'manual trans/three pedal' drivers and the visceral feel and how it's a sort of 'fine art' and all, I do still have to agree with this:
In a race, the fastest one/first to the finish line wins.
And your point is???? What is wrong with shifting like you do on a video game? Think about Chrysler Drag Cars in the early to mid 60s with their push button shifters on the dash. They were called Dial a Win since so many of the cars won. The thrill isn't from flopping the lever around the thrill is from the car performing at its utmost and you making it do that. When you get the thrill of accelerating properly off Turn 6 at the Glen the feeling is the second best feeling you can have in a car. You don't really care about the mechanism just the fact it is doing the best it can under your direction.

Although it is a great thrill, we can't do it for a long time. But we can get the second best thrill and make it last a long time when driving a great car at its limits for a half hour to 40 minutes at a time.

Example: I recently taught my Fiance' how to drive my daily driver POS 2003 Lancer 5 speed. After a few hours of her behind the seat, she absolutely loves driving a stick now and how "fun" it is. She wants her next car to be a manual in fact. I've driven a few DCT cars and while the transmission is far more advanced, it still doesn't make it necessarily better for the driving experience to some people.
As far as the C7 goes. A standard manual and DCT transmission option makes most sense. GM would be foolish not to offer a DCT. It's money but I think it will help with sales.

I don't see it happening initially though which is a shame. I believe that the new car might have a vastly improved 6L80/6L90 based 'traditional style' automatic with 6 or possibly even 7+ gears and improved paddle shifters though and that can work well too.

I saw a video on this site. About a GT3 with DCT. " IF you don't have a DCT then your not serious about going fast". They work great, much better than the SMG M3 i drove 10 years ago.
I was lucky enough to drive an F430 with F1 shift, it was great. Don't knock till you try it.
The trans/shifter is the thing I hate the most about my Z06. I own a Mazadspeed miata, it has outstanding shift feel, snicks right into gear. I get in my Z06, and its like damn, this thing shifts like a GD tractor. Sow and delibrate, you have to wait for the thing.
A recent Car and Driver article called the manual trans. in the vette "reluctant to shift".

I hope American cars get at least DCT availability so the cost can come down$. Auto would be nice too if it didn't add a bunch of weight. But, it won't really be much help in a Vette trying to take off like a Porsche Turbo S with it all. No illusion there!

Don't you mean "automatic trans." ?

... On a low volume car a single transmission choice probably can save a lot of money although the cost of the individual transmissions may be more. Transmission logistics support would be cut in half and overall it just might have a bottom line impact on a low volume car's cost.

In another thread, I stated my son and I had discussed the DCT over lunch today. Your post is close to what I stated to him, e.g. building one transmission and stocking repair items for that one transmission is pure genius from a business model standpoint. And performance doesn't really miss a beat.

Neither of those cars were running rough shod over the competition that had the old fashion stick gear selector.
Hurst made a bunch of money in the 60's-70's selling old fashioned automatic transmission gear selectors using a stick mounted on the floor. I had a Hurst Dual Gate in my 1964 427 Mallibu SS with a turbo 400 and 4.56 gears. Never missed a shift.
Take a look at the 2012 Camaro COPO cars. The use an old fashion gear selector stick mounted on the floor to shift their old fashioned 2 speed powerglide transmission. No pushbuttons used.

Although they have continued to improve the A6 since it was introduced in 2006( I have an 06 C6/A6) in the vette, the A6 is no DCT. Just go drive a new M3 with DCT or a Porsche with PDK( Porsche's version of a dual clutch) and you will see the difference. When you upshift or downshift with the paddles, the gear changes happen instantly with no lag. My guess is GM will have a DCT in the C7. If they cheap out with using another automatic instead, they will lose a lot of sales to BMW or Porsche( I'm one of them). I'll keep my 10 GS 6 speed manual coupe, but replace my 06 C6/A6 with a new M3.

I used to race motorcycles Bill so I totally see what everyone is getting at. I had my engine built so crazy it required a rebuild to the engine after every 8 hours of use. Anything I could do to get either more power or the ability to go faster I would.
Again, I'm not buying a race car though. Now if I get enough money someday to have a dedicated track car, you and I can go to the track together with our matching DCTs OK?

If you already drive a C6 and think it feels like a tractor, come drive my C5Z

I want my next sports car to have a Dual clutch transmission. I hope the C7 offers this so I can make my fourth new corvette purchase.
Otherwise I'll hang onto my present Manual transmission Z51 LS3 C6 for a little while longer..

If they stick with the manual, I'd love to see them switch to a:
R 2 4 6
|-|- |- |
1 3 5 7
layout for the shifts. Better for the track, and for $60,000+, the car is starting to look less and less like it wants to be driven every day.
