Good move on their part, especially the $5K in special training. This is showing they know they have a high-line car and want only select dealers handling their flagship.
This way only a small % of dealers are allowed to sell the car and this makes sure they are well prepared for proper Customer service before and after the car is sold.
I hope GM does something like this and better yet let select Cadillac dealers sell the Corvette as well.

An interesting idea. One that would probably add five figures to the price of the vette, and ensure four figure annual sales numbers.

I'm pretty close with the gm at my dealer and apparently Chevy announced that dealers had to sell 4 of the 2013 model year Vettes to be able to order one 2014. They are having lots of issues with service equipment, mechanic and sales training at the smaller 1-3 unit stores so they are trying to shrink the number of Vette authorized dealers.

That was my point - since Viper production numbers were such a low volume, it would only support a small number of dealerships.
With the Corvette running in the tens of thousand units per year - limiting exposure, selling locations would be shooting themselves in the proverbial foot.

There aren't 40K Vipers in existence.
I think this would be a great idea. There are Chevy dealerships all over the country that only sell a few Vettes a year. Do you really want your Vette entrusted to a mechanic who only works on Silverados and Cruzes all day?? I think dealers should be required to sell and service a certain number of Vettes before being certified to sell or service the C7.

Less dealers means less opportunities, which translates into less competition, which translates into higher markups. While the Corvette often provides healthy competition for the Viper, it is not the Viper. The current system based on allocations seems to work well. Maybe in the European market, a more scarce plan would work. But not here.
