I think my biggest concern would be in the first few years the failure rate and quality of workmanship rebuilding them.
The 6 speed in my C6 is much smoother than the 4 speed in my Impala SS's are.

I've raced my 6 speed automatic equipped C6 numerous times with hundreds of all out/wide open throttle 1/4 mile passes and it's held up fantastically well.
The problem with most cars that have 8 gears or more is that they always have a hard time deciding what gear they want to be in. Fuel economy will certainly improve if your vehicle is constantly running at a lower RPM. But it will not improve if the transmission is constantly changing.

I would have no problem with them stopping at a maximum of only 7 forward gears (manual or automatic) and calling it a day.
Even 6 has been quite versatile and enjoyable.
Sometimes more isn't always better LOL.
