I'm still guessing the 9 spd for FWD will be CVT.

Standard planetary. If it was a CVT, they would just call it a CVT with commanded ratios.

There are better ways to improve fuel economy. Even if it does improve it, it will be nothing to write home about. Make work project if you ask me. More than 6 or 7 gears......overkill.

Evidence says it improves fuel efficiency a few percentage points. To meet the new standards the manufacturers will need all their tricks.

But it will boost the "save the manual guys" testosterone much more than a 5,6,or 7 speed manual.

The large Chrysler 300 has a 8 speed auto, and gets 19 city/31 hwy.

Although not appropriate for a C7, with a large number of available ratios the engine can be designed to operate at higher efficiency and high power output over a very limited RPM range to further enhance mileage.

This is part of the reason why locomotives using diesel engines as the prime mover driving a generator which in turn powers electric drive motors can still be quite efficient. Although you have conversion loss using the engine to power the electric generator and then using motors to convert the electricity back to motive force the ability to design an engine which only has to operate over a limited RPM range allows for efficient use of fuel.

That's exactly how the Volt does it when in gasoline engine mode, after having depleted its plug in charge as a pure electric. It then runs as a series hybrid - ic engine - generator - electric motor - cvt - drive wheels.

Let me say this kindly. You three are idiots.

You think ANY of us save the manual's enthusiasts, want a 10 speed manual transmission?

Maybe EVERY car should have a 10 speed manual.. It would just about eliminate all the fools around me every morning trying to drive and eat, talk, text, surf the internet, put makeup..

They'd all be too damn busy shifting.

Yup - 10 speed manuals might be useful for big trucks with heavy loads requiring lots of low gear ratios, at best. Most of them are switching to automatics anyway. Personally, I think the pending 7 spd manual may be at the limit of practicality for performance cars.

How many gears did road course race cars have at the peak of manual transmission days, before the onset of other types? 6? 7? 8?

My C5 has about double your C6's hp. I'm not too worried about my manliness in someone else's eyes thank you very much.

Just think what you could have done if you had an LS3 to start with. I saw one this weekend that was 1400 hp, 1375 fp. On the other hand, GM will replace mine for FREE if it goes BOOM

Thats nice. You saw a 1400hp one. Good for you. And it is nice that you are happy with a stock ls3 with a warranty. Really. 436hp puts me to sleep in cars our size. Also, my ls2 was terrorizing the streets two years before the ls3 even came out. 6+ years and 30k miles with zero issues. Glad you enioy your syock ls3, but it isnt enough for guys like me.

Come on guys. No point in getting all macho on the net. Even more so with a site that very few women are on.
