ZL1 Corvette
I was reading some stuff on the Challenger forum, (used to own one) and came across a post I found a bit interesting.

From what I have read, ZL1 was an extremely rare option, but was available on the C3, so it falls in line with the Stingray revival. It also was an add on to the L88 engine, a designation which GM recently trademarked. I know the guys actual post wasn't the most compelling thing, but I found all of it interesting. You guys think it could be something, or am I just too bored and reaching?

In 1969 there were two Corvettes built with the ZL-1 option. That option cost $4,718.35 The base price of a 1969 Corvette was $4,781.00 for a coupe and $4,438.00 for the convertible. That option was as much as a base car cost.

I would not put any stock in that post on the Dodge site. As already stated, the ZL1 tag is on the Camaro. Can you imagine all the static if they used that also for the C7 high performance what will all the Camaro tail light posts.
There were some favorable comments on the C7 but there were also a lot of dis-favorable, but then again it is a Dodge site so they are not all going to be jumping up and down.

I saw a post/thread earlier this week (in either the C7 or C6 sections) which stated there was also a
third one built (1969), originally owned by GM and sold/used for racing. I'll have to look for it again...

Wasn't that option for the aluminum block? And from what I recall, that Corvette ran the fastest 1/4 mile times up until the C6Z...
Although, that part of my Corvette history is a little fuzzy. But I remember hearing that it was done strictly for numbers. Just like Nissan did with launch control on the GTR.

ZL1 was the ultimate Big Block during the C3 Generation, and the ZR1 was the ultimate small block, really a racier version of the LT1 car. So to me it would be cool to have a ZL1 and a ZR1, with the ZL1 being for drag racing and the ZR1 for road racing.

There is a history on it, but not much of one. Let face it not a lot of people driving Corvette's have ever heard of the ZL1 option for the 1969 Corvette, besides they are already using that in the Camaro.

Well they did have them in the Camaro and there was a total of 69 ZL1 Camaros produced. But the Corvette had only 2 produced. The Camaro's with the engines were designed to go NHRA racing, but because cost only a handful were actually racing. As far as I know 1969 was the only year Chevrolet offer the engine in either car.

I owned a ZL-1 Corvette but it wasn't "factory". In 1969 I ordered a ZL-1 bare aluminum block from GM parts, built it up with all GM HD components, and dropped it in my lightened 1968 coupe. Crazy fast. I eventually sold it to my best friend and its lived in Colorado ever since. He passed recently, it will be for sale soon.
