Yeah - waaaaaaaaay back when as a kid I had a "63 1/2 Falcon Sprint convertible with a power top. Tried putting it down - once - while driving at about 30 mph. BIG mistake! Torqued the whole top frame - had to disassemble, straighten, and reassemble. No interlocks or electronic nannies on that one.

It gets "worse" (or better) - I have a 67 Mustang GT Fastback to fill my Steve McQueen wanna be needs (yeah, I know his was a 68..) and my SO has an 08 Mustang GT. Also own Dodge, Jag (with a sbc 350!), Harley, and oh yeah - a Chevy Volt. I'm an equal opportunity consumer.

Actually, that was a pretty nice car at the time - and I sure couldn't afford a Corvette, let alone the insurance, back then!

Yeah - mine was white with a red interior and a white top.......... kinda let me fantasize a bit about a '53 Corvette.

Very interesting... the new tonneau cover actuation makes complete sense in reference to being able to use it at low speeds. Very slick. Too bad you can't get a manual top anymore. One of the neatest things about the C5 vert was that it was actually 10 lbs lighter than the coupe!

Any "roll over" protection in any convertible is primarily psychological anyway. A pillar (i.e. windshield) isn't going to act as a roll hoop, angle is just too tough to withstand the energy of a roll over. Assist with a B pillar roll hoop, sure, but not on its own.
Heck, the roll hoop in the C5/C6 (and I assume C7) is a mightly beefy piece of structure, and it takes a beating in the roll overs that I've seen documented. I'd just find an organization that lets you run a 'vert in a DE and enjoy!
Have a good one,
Mike

My friend had an 05 convertible with the Power Top and mine is manual. Personally I'll take the manual any day, in a pinch I can put the top up/down quicker than the power top and you save a bit of weight and one less electro-mechanical device to fail.

BMW has an interesting rollover protection system with a pop-up rollbar that deploys almost instantly when the car detects it's needed. Chevy could do the same thing with the Corvette vert if they wanted to.

I've seen BMW rollover protection deploy at auto-x events a few times... car thinks it's going to roll from the g-loads and deploys them in a hard turn!
