Who knows what it will be referred to once it hits the street. But as already mentioned, if you walk in to the dealership to buy or order one, you will most likely say I would like to order/buy a Corvette Stingray base model. In other words, you do not want any of the options. Or you may say I would like to order/buy a Corvette Stingray Z51 option.
The Stingray name so they say was used because this car was worthy of the iconic name. BS, it was a marketing ploy. After all if they wanted to conjure up visions of the past they would have spelled it Sting Ray.

You are correct, as they did not say which generation they were referring to. I think of the Mid Year Corvette when you say Sting Ray. After all that was the first in the blood line and when they said that they had to make sure this car was worthy of the name, I automatically thought of the original Sting Ray.

I always think of "Sting Ray" as the '63-'67 C2's. When the C3 '68 Corvette came out it was still called a "Stingray" but didn't have that designation (emblem) on the car till the '69 model. It is a great name and is a marketing thing.

Maybe GM should bring back this emblem too -

I'm sure its been said already. But Stingray = Base.
What GM found out during GS introduction is people buying a Corvette also want a name attached to it because it was widebody. People called their Corvette by its special name. People with a Z06, said they had a Z06.. not a Corvette Z06. Same goes for ZR1. Same goes for GS.
So this generation they knew they would have a hard time getting people call the base car.. a base car.. especially considering their is not widebody available. Which is why they named it Stingray. To put it another way, if the C6 base car was called a Stingray.. then the 2013 Corvette line up would look like this:
Stingray
Grand Sport
Z06
ZR1
Expect the C7 lineup to eventually look like this:
Stingray
ZR1

Yet another time I agree with you, except if either was on the car, it would come off, just doesn't fit this era. I sure hope they don't FU the Z06 with the dead fish

Hell, the way GM is marketing the car, it makes it look like nobody at GM knows what is going on, so do they? Feed the public and buyers with complete information about the production car, they don't seem to be able to do that! Or hopfully their making a few minor changes before the production run starts - it's been done before!

The world isn't used to the base Corvette having its own name, but they'll get used to it. Some CorvetteForum visitors may take a little longer.
The problem was created when the Z06 was pitched as a different model and became popular and distinct in the public consciousness.
But by making the Z51 visually distinctive, GM runs the risk of creating the problem again.

Based on this the Z51 badges will now start being made in prep for removing those pesky fish. Again the Z51 is an option not a model, get over it. Go back to your foxhole.
