Default Orange-peel paint

I have noticed some very bad O.P. paint issues on the C-7. So bad in fact that I would hesitate to choose a metallic color (White does not show O.P.). Does there seem to be certain areas on the body which is common to all the cars?

Also, for you painters out there, is this orange peel in the clear coat or in the color beneath?

TIA

Topic has been beat to death for the past two months. FYI orange peel is in the clear coat and can be wet sanded out.

It is mostly in the clear coat. I had mine wet sanded. It looks beautiful now. Here is one shot after we did the sides, and before we completed the rear fascia.

What grit paper did they sand with?

It would great to see some before and after closeups. I bet it looks like a mirror in black.

Really???... Who told you that???... I've seen plenty of white vettes/cars with orange peel.

White can also have orange peel.... ANY color can have orange peel.... Its the CLEAR COAT that has to be sanded and polished to reduce the orange peel... It can come with any mass produced car.

They had a segment on Ultimate Factories: BENTLEY that addressed the issue...

The paint shop sup. said they spend a combined 18+ hours with mutiple people on one car polishing to get the mirror like finish... A car with a mirror like finish takes time. Most people know mass produced cars do not get as much time as some limited vehicles that are allowed to go that extra step and expen$e to try and achieve perfection.

Here is a quick video... Some of the polishing segment starts around 1:40.

I can't tell you for sure. Some areas he used 3000.

Yes, it looks mirror-glaze now; worth every penny.

I watched ultimate factories this last week of both Ferrari and Porshe. Both had orange peel after all their processes were complete.

I did a Corolla this summer that was badly scratched. Nothing deep though. Used 1500 grit and then an orbital buffer. My first attempt at this. Came out beautiful.

While this has been talked about before, I was actually thinking about it on the way home from work yesterday. I happened to be next to a new Kia Optima. It was black and the paint was flawless. I've also noticed the same thing on new Honda Civics and Accords, as well as every Infiniti and Hyundai Genesis': no orange peel.

So, if these mass produced vehicles can leave the factory with flawless paint, why can't GM? The Corvette certainly isn't the only vehicle that has orange peel. My $60,000 Yukon Denali does, too. My $25,000 HHR-SS did, too.

Do the Japanese and Korean manufacturers have a better painting process? Better materials?

Seriously - if I could have taken a picture of this Kia Optima I would have!! The black on it was so perfect!!! I'd love to have that finish on my GM vehicles, especially if I'm buying a C7!!!

Does anyone know for sure if the Corvette body panels get a sanding and polishing at all?...

Or are they just painted in the paint shop and assembled to the car as it rolls down the line?

UPDATE: Well i guess they do polish some.. i found a couple C6 plant tour pics that do show some C6 body panels getting polished... I guess it comes back to the person doing the polishing and how much time is spent polishing...

Cost are all over the place. $1,500-$3,000.

You have to realize after wet sanding and polishing you will lose most of your UV protection.

This may not sound like a big deal but you'll see when the clear goes away.

My .02 worth.

Orange peel? What's orange peel? Wife says it's used in cooking or something like that. Not sure what it has to do with car paint. You people are crazy.

I've a lot of wet sanding! 1500 is pretty aggressive stuff! 3000-2000
is the range of grit to use! Get some color in your sand water and it's too late!

Ya when the clear is gone say bye bye to your paint.

My 08 MS actually isn't to bad not perfect mind you but not worth the expenses or hazard in doing a wet sanding.

Yes it would improve the paint but I have seen much worse orange peel.

The only C7 I have seen was horrible.

Just luck of the draw or go buy and exotic.
