All F's and 1 D. All my teachers told me I'd never amount to anything. I ended up going to college and now make more than any of my teachers did.
My plates means many things. grades don't always mean anything. some people progress at different rates. some times there are things more important than grades, etc...
I grew up an orphan and in foster homes and institutions etc - so I wasnt able to focus on school. I try and remind my wife this - as she's a teacher and she gets worried about her students not doing well. Sometimes people are gunna progress on their own - so don't worry too much!
My plates are at once a big FU to those who didnt believe in me as well as motivation for those who are on their own paths. ;-)

I was an engineering major, I was on the verge of getting kicked out of college until it actually got hard and I decided I wanted to go to grad school. I went from academic probation to finishing the last half of the degree with a 3.8-4.0 GPA and a 3.2 overall. My school didn't grade inflate (and it was engineering, so it's pretty hard to pull that off). 3.2 put me in the top quarter, so you can imagine what 3,8-4.0 means. In hindsight, I wish I would have gotten A's in my easy BS classes so I could have graduated at the top of my class. Not for any reason than wanting it for myself though.
Same thing happened in grad school, which was basically a joke compared to engineering. I eventually got pissed off at a professor for his bullshit arbitrary grading and took him again (much to his surprise) for a course over the summer to just say "F U" with a high grade (all tests are graded blind with a unique ID number rather than name). I wanted to prove it was nothing other than arbitrary dog **** and an exercise in stroking his ego with what he wanted to hear. First one done with the exam, plenty of time to spare, handed it in and got the highest grade in one of the toughest classes. After that I just put in a little more effort and did fine. I'm pretty sure I make more than 95% of my class, work less than 95% of them and like my job better than about all of them. Seriously eyeing semi-retirement by 45. Should have no debt (including mortgage) by 38 or so. Didn't get a few jobs, despite being well qualified and experienced, because they wanted a GPA to jerk off on in front of clients. Couldn't be more happy making more money and working half as much.
