Performance Exhaust Option
So from what the dealer is telling me, this just makes the exhaust like the older models - where the valve changes only actuate based on engine speed.
Is this true?
If so, why wouldn't you just want the factory exhaust since you can change the sound by the mode selected (ie track, sport, etc)?
I'm guessing the only real benefit is the ~10 ponies from less backpressure or what?

You can only change the exhaust sound by way of the NPP the different driving mode sounds dont change when you have just the standard exhaust. I opted for the standard though because I knew I was going aftermarket anyways. The NPP is a great option though!

So when I listened to the tone change at the dealer, it had to have been a model with the optioned exhaust?

When I got my new car I drove it almost 1,000 home with the first 75% of the trip in the healthy performance mode. On the last day the sound got a little tedious so I switched to quiet mode. One thing about the exhaust option that I love is the ability to quiet it down when the sound becomes tedious on a long ride.

I had NPP in my C6 and I added the fantastic Mild to Wild switch to make it even more fun...
When thinking about the C7 the ONLY must have in my mind was NPP....and now with Engine Sound Management it's customizable via the infotainment screen which makes it even better IMO...
So to each his own but I'm one of NPP's biggest fans

I'm assuming NPP acts quite differently in a manual car than an automatic because of the AFM. I think the exhaust quiets down when the car goes into 4 banger mode and that is often on an automatic car in any drive mode and only in eco mode on a manual.

Your assumption is correct if you have the automatic, when it switch's to V4 mode, the exhaust note is muted. However I found a work around if you don't want it switching to V4. Just keep it in full manual where you have to use the paddle shift. It will remain in V8 and if you have sound management set to 'OFF', it will remain that way.

I just learned something!
I didn't realize that V4 mode would kick in in any selected mode. I thought it was only available when "the ****" was set to (E)conomy mode.
So I can drive in sport mode and it will still kick down to V4 if the computer tells it it is OK. Hmmmmm. (insert smilie with light bulb blinking over guy's head)

NPP control is for the rear (post muffler valves). You can see from this Cutaway, that the exhause is routed straight through when the NPP valves (on the outer pipes) open. Green Tubing is perforated, Red is the packing material..
