After all the stories about to much oil......Do you put the car on ramps

If you are worried about the overflow, just get it to where you should take a reading acc to manual, and then use a turkey blaster and take out enuf so it reads midway in the hash marks (or even lower), no need to go nuclear with a full change if oil is still good....

I did mine myself on my lift. The oil filter was a Fram 10060, same as my C6Z06. And the procedure was virtually identical.

I don't remember struggling with the oil filter, but I have just about every device to remove them, so it's usually not a struggle on any of my vehicles.

(My car is a Z51, not sure if the base model oil filter is different)

If you don't know about it, member Theta is assembling a volume of DIY How To's from the service manual. They are located in the C7 Tech Forum Sticky section. Here's the Z51 oil change procedure:

You actually get FOUR Oil Changes. Two Years or 24,000 Miles, whichever comes first.

My dealer will only do the free change at the one year point or 5000 miles. I may not put 5000 miles on it in a year and don’t like letting oil stay in the car that long. Don

With all this overfill going on, unless you trust your dealer, I would do it myself. It is not hard at all. If it is a Z51 don't put over 9.5 quarts back in. Good luck.

Glen, how do you use a turkey baster to get oil out? Through the dipstick tube? Does it seat well enough to pull it out?

The intake side of the tank is baffled and I don't think you can get a turkey baster in deep enough to get to the oil. If you don't have something like this:

You will need to drain from the bottom using the plug at the base of the oil tank tube. I don't know exactly which of the 2 that is off the top of my head.

I think an oil drill pump with tube would pull it out fine...

Yep, that shouldn't be a problem as long as the suction line is small and flexible enough to navigate the baffle or use the dipstick hole.

How do you guys reset the oil life counter?

Would def like to change the oil myself. Its the only reason why I still bother using the dealer.

Steering wheel controls on right of wheel.

Press down arrow until you display "Oil Life"

Press "Right" arrow and Press Ok

Technically you get free scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 24,000 miles, whichever comes first. That means you can get, at a minimum 2 oil changes (one every 12 months) and at a maximum 4 (one every 6000 miles). It all depends on the number of miles you put in the car in that 2 year span.

Great PDF on changing the oil.
I do one more thing which may be unneccesary. I fill the new oil filter with oil before installing. Maybe this eliminates a split second when the oil line is sucking air from an empty filter.
I have also found that big pair of channel lock pliers works to remove the old filter if you don't have the special oil filter cap wrench.
