Default Expected Tire Life?

OK, so I just replaced my tires at 18,000 miles. I probably could have gotten about 2000 more miles if I hadn't tracked the car last weekend. Got back from the track, and most of the tread on the outside of the front tires was gone.

I've replaced them with the non-run flat tires (a little cheaper, and they are supposed to be slightly stickier according to the Discount Tire guy I talked to.

Now, I just need to research what wheels/tires I should get strictly to run at the track.

Good to hear. I got around 16000 on the Goodyears on my GS I traded on the Z51, which I was told was better than expected.

Woodson: Who would buy a base and track it?
Probably a "straight line" track guy like me, that knows that the difference in weight makes for a winning combo in the 1/4 mile.

it was a legitimate question. Non-Z51's are not track prepped.

Yeah I get that. At least to me though, a track has turns and braking. You are talking about a drag stip.

When I replaced the tires on my GS at 16000 miles the rears still had some life, the fronts were gone. Never tracked, and not out of alignment.

But cooling is an issue if you track a base. And maybe oil starvation.

Ok that's weird. You sure about the alignment?

Yet the base will corner at 1g added to that my base 7 speed rides and is quiet as the Infinity I replaced with the stingray . I was pleasantly surprised as I wanted the Z06 and when I found out I would have to wait till 2015 I figured why spend more to get the 2014 Z51 when I will replace it with a Z06 in 2015 ? I was very impressed and surprised with the base .

Yes. I would also find it weird if I only drove straight, however turning corners in everyday city driving apparently puts more wear on front tires. This may be the reason we rotate tires on vehicles with matching tires.

Strange. My street driven cars are always two sets of rears per one set of fronts. Either I'm a leadfoot (for sure) or you are hammering corners on the street way harder than I am.

Kind of surprised by this...

Unless you spin the rears a lot on take-off, it seems the fronts would need changing more often. My fronts are always worse than my rears and I assumed it was because it was much heavier up there (and though I don't track my car, I DO drive it with spirit--my wife hates to ride with me).

On my wife's Cooper S, she neglected to have the tires rotated and consequently, her fronts wore out and had to be replaced--rears were still good for some time. And she DOESN'T drive spiritedly.

You don't have to spin the rear tires at all to have high wear rate. Constant hard acceleration will do that.
And the mini is FWD is it not?

The reason the fronts wear so "badly" is that the factory alignment calls for quite a bit of negative camber. This tends to wear the inside edges of the front tires more than the rest of the tread. This is also a very common issue with late model Corvettes.

If you're not tracking the car, one idea is to have the front realigned to the more neutral end of the camber alignment and that will help quite a bit.
