Default Dealer won't change oil until under 20% oil life remaining

Just called my dealer today to get my first oil change. I have 2500 miles on my c7 with a 67% oil life remaining. But they informed me that I have to wait until it hits 20% and that they don't go by the mileage. If i do decide to get it done before that... I would have to come out of pocket. My question is... Is it OK or normal to wait till you hit the 20% marker? Thanks for the input

20% “rule” is being followed by the two dealers closest to me.

I’ve always changed my own oil and will do so here as well.

With the number of miles I will put on the car, I won’t get to 20% until the max of a year occurs and I won’t leave oil in any car that long.

First oil change will be in a couple of hours, Castrol Edge Extended Performance synthetic and Fram XG10060 synthetic filter at just over 1000 miles. Will move to an every 7 mo or so change interval afterward.

Your call. Don

It's very okay to wait until you hit the 20% mark. They know what they're doing with that calculation and the old school every 3000 mile mentality of oil changes is just that, old school.

Such a stupid rule. I feel if I have 4 free oil changes in 2 years I should be able to use them when I want. Probably going to call them back and tell them I'm switching dealers then see if they will make an exception to this rule. Thanks

I'm more concerned as well with the myth about there being metal shavings in the oil because it's a new car... So I wanted to get an oil change a little earlier than I normally would. Plus it's going to be garaged and not driven in the winter months. So by the time I hit 20% might be next spring... and Like w88fixer mentioned...I wouldn't want to leave oil in for that long

Do you know if it's 20% remaining or 12 months? Wouldn't hurt to ask the dealer.

GM says that is their policy. I've confirmed this with 2 Chevy CS sources - their 800 # and their website chat

YMMV......

It seems to be be very "dealer dependent". Many here have reported getting free early oil changes and told they can get 4 free anytime in the first 2 years.

If you want to read about it here are 4 prior discussions:

So change it yourself and put in a magnetic drain plug while you're at it ..

I guess you and I are fortunate to have dealers taking care of us. Mine changed my Z51 at 43% and my 14 Silverado at 33%.

My dealership said I get 4 free oil changes, and that I can use them whenever I please during the first 2 years/24k miles. I changed just the filter myself @ 1k miles, then had them do the first scheduled oil change at 15% life/6500 miles after I got home from a roadtrip.

Just tell them "What difference does it make?" 4 is 4.

I changed mine at 1,100 miles to ensure any metal shavings were flushed out. I made sure to install Mobil 1 Full Synthetic.

That's exactly what my Cadillac dealer tells me on my ATS. He also says that the oil is a semi-synthetic and not a full synthetic. This is a Cadillac, not a Corvette.
