Great , I have plenty of goo gone . The only question is that it is a very thin strip . Can I apply with a rag ?

Absolutely not, much stronger, can discolor some paints and plastic....

From their website:

General Purpose Adhesive Remover MAX VOC 20%

CAUTION: Always test on an inconspicuous area first, as every hard surface is different. Damages many plastics, worn vinyl floors, some automotive paints, and some carpets.

Goof Off or Goo Gone, both work very well to take off adhesive.

Sanford thinner for rubber cement. Remove the tape residue with a rag dipped in the thinner which has a high flash point, so it evaporates quickly. Way less messy than Goo Gone.

Acetone will work on original paint (clear coat ), as well. I've used it for at least two decades. It will take off any adhesive residue and leave a perfectly clean surface for whatever you need to apply.

I have used it on repainted areas w/o any problem, but would check just to make sure your paint guy is as good as mine.

I use this 3M adhesive remover for most residue of that type. Buy it in auto paint stores, does not affect paint.
