the reasoning behind the change is GM wants a path to void warranty based on non compliance with proper break in...

Well, I've got 900 miles and just received my two magnetic oil pan plugs, so I guess timing is just about right.

So, I changed mine at 3500 miles. Is GM going to add some type of additional warranty if there is an engine failure because it was not changed at 500?

I just spoke to the service manager at the dealer that I bought my car from. He has not heard of the service bulletin as of yet.

But the dealer agrees with me that they will replace the car with a new one and give me $5,000 for my inconvenience.

If you believe the above, I can have the deed to the Brooklyn Bridge to sell you.

I changed oil in my 2014 at 800 miles. Every 3500 miles after that. No big deal to change first oil at 500 miles when my Z06 gets here. My dealer in Billings Montana is 500 miles away looks like I will be changing oil as soon as I drive it home.

I'm inclined to agree. And Z51s because those are likely the models to be most susceptible - driven harder.

It sounds to me that GM discovered that the dry sump parts were a source of potential contamination and hopefully they are flushing them out with solvent or at least compressed air before installation, now.

If I had already taken delivery of one of these early cars, I think I would have an oil analysis performed, just to be safe.

I think it has to be something like this, changing EVERY z51 just because they MIGHT be run hard does not make much sense financially....

But since they are saying going forward they want it changed, its probsbly not bad parts ?

Very perplexing....but an interesting mystery....

If this is the case...those of us that changed our oil and were charged by the dealer....should get a refund! The dealer that performed my first oil change (at 1000 miles) refused to accept the vehicle maintenance oil change included because it was not at 5000 miles....

I have 22,000 miles, now. 1st oil change at 2,000 miles. Just used my fourth free change a couple of days ago. My question is: Do I get a fifth change this late in the game? Or only those that are able to take advantage of the ~500 mile first change?

Just when I thought I was done with the free stuff.

In decades old retrospect, I cannot ever remember hearing or reading about any case of a domestically sold vehicle having problems because of 'oil', except reading once of I believe a BMW owner never changing oil for tens of thousands of miles. Of course, this observation obviously eliminates anyone whose vehicle ran out of oil! I'm much more concerned about problems related to electronics than of lubrication.

I would contact your area GM rep, my service manager stated I got 4 oil changes over the two year period at any interval I chose not at just 5K, if I elected to get one every 1000 mi so be it, but I would get 4 only. There is nothing in the maintenance agreement on you window sticker that states intervals, just two years or 24K mi.

That is the official stance of the GM reps on here (Melissa, anyway). Glen e has posted the link recently, and MODs if you are looking, that link should be on a sticky.

I know that the magnetic drain plugs are available from parts stores but is there a GM part number for a GM magnetic plug?
