I’ve posted that Champion Labs makes the vast majority of car oil filters including Mobil 1, K&N, AC Delco as well was Fram and others. They say that their XG line, a totally synthetic filter, is the best filter they make.
Well, I changed the oil in my base C7 @ 1000 miles and changed it yesterday after 7 mo and 3000 miles. When I removed the XG10060, the gasket remained on the oil filter flange and fell off when I touched it. I’ve been changing oil in cars for 50 yrs and have seen that happen only once before. I installed another XG but then got paranoid. Looked at the remaining fresh XG I had and the gasket would lift right out of the groove as if there was no retention feature whatsoever. There were crimps around the edge ostensibly to retain the gasket but did not do so.
So.....not trusting the XG on the car, I replaced it with a Pure One filter. That filters gasket was secure in the groove and all is well.
Talked to Champion, tech support guy understood my lack of confidence, said there was no data on previous gasket issues but would document it. Don
That's an odd occurrence with the XG filter, as I've been using those filters on both of my cars ever since they came out and have had zero problems with them.
I have an XG-10060 in the garage now and the gasket is fairly firm in its groove. If you tug on it it will come out, but I can't see how this is a problem. I had a gasket pull off and stick to the filter housing of the engine once in the past on my ZTR mower using a Briggs & Stratton filter. I didn't notice it, installed the new filter, and made a mess when the two gaskets leaked like a sieve. Ever since then for all applications I check to make sure the old gasket comes off with the filter.
As for Fram, their Ultra line of filters is a top-tier product--but I wouldn't use one of the cheaper types on any vehicle.
The gaskets on Fram filters have been coming off way too easily for years. The instructions even tell you to make sure the old gasket doesn't remain on the engine. I can remember when you never had to worry about the gasket coming off, but then they 'improved' them.
The really bad thing is that a double gasket will pass the leak check after the filter change, but then let go a day later when you're driving down the road. That's really inconvenient, and it makes a big mess.
Champion Labs makes the Delco Gold Ultraguard filters and those gaskets are crimped pretty good. Frankly in over 45 years of wrenching, I don't recall a filter gasket ever coming off the filter and sticking to the filter mounting boss.
I've changed oil for many years too and have seen a number of gasket issues. Yea you always look at the engine to assure yourself there is not a gasket still stuck there.
As far as it coming off when installing...... that's why you run some oil over the new gasket. Once it is snugged down if there are no leaks..........drive on.
Frankly I don't care if it comes off when I am throwing it away as long as it snugs down and seals on the install.

I always put oil on the gasket before seating it. Don
My C7 was delivered with an PF64 filter so that's what I am going to use. If the PF64 is good enough for GM as the OEM filter for the LT1, who am I to say its not.
I compared it to the PF48 and the top steel plate has more holes so its going to flow more oil and the bypass is on the top not the bottom. Its also heavier.
While there are many different brands that will screw on including the PF48 and, I'm staying with the PF64. If there is a warranty issue and the subject comes up what filter did I use, I have proof it was only the PF64. I think GM could claim the wrong oil filter was used, so no warranty if an oil related engine failure.
I ordered a box of 6 through Amazon so I have enough for a few years.

The only time I had a gasket stick to the engine was with a Pure One filter on an '05 GTO I had. Unfortunately, I didn't notice it and had a hell of a mess to clean up when I started and moved my car. Somehow I must have got side tracked because I usually clean the flange before screwing on the new filter. Lessons learned the hard way I guess.
I still use Pure One filters though as I think they are a good filter for the money.
Mopar branded filters, probably made in the same plant, have been having this issue for the last few years. So much so that there's a tech note to dealers advising them to check the engine block prior to installing the new filter to make sure the old filters gasket isn't stuck to the flange.
It has no effect on the workings of the filter or the gasket, it's just a byproduct of the gasket retention (crimp) design.
