Default 2016 Z51 First Impressions for start of 3K trip

Since I will be putting on over 3K miles in 2 weeks, I thought I would list my impressions as I might experience things faster due to the length of time on the road

Part of this was in another thread, but bringing it forward into this thread

Day #1:

Well, I almost put 100 miles on it today in BG... Shuttling back and forth from Discount Tire and NCM to get the wheels over there and other stuff and then unloading the rental into the C7. Dan, the NCM delivery guy, did me a huge favor and put the wheels from my rental in the back of his truck so I could eliminate one full round trip back and forth from that area of BG. Thanks Dan!

A guy on the forum bought the wheels that were on the car, so had to ship them out today also and Fed-Ex's printer didn't work so that was a challenge getting the labels printed.

These are my first impressions:

* There is another thread regarding the audio quality. I 100% agree with the guy that said turn the Bose auto leveling (whatever it is called off). The NCM guys turned it on when they were going over the car with me -- said they should have turned it. I noticed an incredible for the worse difference when the auto leveler went on. Dan (NCM delivery person) thought it sounded great.. I'm a co-owner for HomeTheaterForum.COM, so I realize that people have their preferences, but I am used to very calibrated rooms with expensive tools to get them that way. I just let it go and haven't figured out how to turn it off, but dang -- it sounds terrible --- way too boomy. I know it sounds better because I was listening to it before Dan switched it. I'm sure I will get it straightened out and have some gear I will use to try to get it inline more when I get back to Seattle.

* Lines: I'm used to the rolling smooth lines of the C5 -- so when I get in the C7 with the great mean sharp lines I just love it. I loved those lines when I sat in my buddies Z51 last summer and I still love it now. I can't really go back to the rolling smooth lines. Just love the body on this car, particularly after just seeing a 1963... mmmmm

* Front Camera: OMG -- I can finally park normal! That camera is right on with the yellow and red lines. The days of scrapping your nose are long gone! Excellent feature and good implementation

* The ride -- DAMN -- I had my first ride in my buddie's 2015 Z51 last year this time and that is one of the reason I got stoked to buy a new C7 -- along with the fact that he told me about the Buyer's Tour. This ride is SO DIFFERENT than my 2004 Z06 -- the magnetic shocks are just great to have a ride that I know my wife won't complain about in Tour Mode and still have a bunch of fun in Sport Mode -- pretty much what I have been driving in it all day. I can't let it loose due to engine break-in, but the handling just has the rock steady feeling that my C5 Z06 didn't have. Of course that was 11 yrs. ago in tech, but it is a great ride. I have never drove a non-Z51 before, so I don't know how the breaking is different, but this thing just stops - now. Of course, waiting to really get on it for stopping. The card just rides solid-and I am itching to get it onto the track. The car goes over rough road without skipping -- my Z06 would always hop around on rough road.

* The interior. I got 3LT mainly because that is the only way I could get 36S -- Yellow Stitch. I had sat in some 3LT's before and compared them with 2LT's and didn't know if it was worth the extra $. I'm totally convinced I did the right thing -- super happy about the interior and now that I am actually riding around in it, can really get a great comparison to our stark interiors before.

* Exhaust note. I really liked by 2004 Z06 exhaust note and I really like the Z51 exhaust note. They are entirely different, but I really love both of them. I've only been driving around with all four open, though I did go to Economy mode to see what they sounded like and I thought I was almost in silence. Not sure why I would ever want to turn them down, but nice option to have for those that need it.

* Electronics -- I do software for a living... I had read quickly over the manual (not the infotainment manual) before taking delivery. There's a lot of manual reading I need to do. I'm loving all the electronics. I had the hardest first part of the day trying to stop putting a key into the ignition! Never realized how much I would fall in love with such a simple feature of walk away and automatic lock and comeback and unlock.

* Rear door hatch. With all my previous 3 C5's, I just got in the habit of leaving the door open to close the hatch. I can actually close the hatch/trunk with booth doors closed. If I didn't use enough force, the auto-pulldown feature kicked in the majority of the times and when it didn't it was just gentle push down for the latch to finish pulling it in.

* Infotainment -- Need to spend some time on this and getting CarPlay hooked up. Dan told me that I had to use USB to get CarPlay to work and it won't go over BT. If that is the case, that kind of sucks as I then have to run the cable to the USB port. I was hoping to just have a very short cable go to the cigarette lighter outlet where it would be much less noticeable. I have the pro clip that I need to hook up. I have the parts, just haven't had time to install the proclip or the Mirrormount for the Passport.

* Hands free. I called my wife in the car. She said the handsfree sounded great, though she kept cutting in and out for me. Haven't debugged that one yet.

* Seats. I opted to not get the competition seats after I sat in them at the dealer. Glad I did as my 6'5" frame has my legs going a little wide and hitting the "bolster" on the rear part of the seat. I keep thinking I have my wallet in my jeans. I will be >7 hours of driving tomorrow -- PIA to not stay the same speed -- so I will have more to report on. I guess I will just get used to it. I love the air cool. I got the microfiber inserts and those really keep you glued to the seat compared to the leather in my Z06 (granted not a great apple to apple comparison because the C5 Z06's didn't have any bolsters to speak off).

* Top: My 1998 C5 had the removable top. I then had a 2001 and 2004 Z06, so never had the opportunity to take off the top. I can believe how light that top is. Even being lighter, I think it is harder to secure in the hatch than the 1998. But, I've only done it once so far.

* Egress and Ingress. Going in and out of the C7 today probably 50 times I discovered that for me, it is much harder to get in and out of than my 2004 Z06. What I mean by harder is that it is much more difficult to get my feet in and out without scuffing the door. I never scuffed my Z06 and I keep nicking the C7 and it is pissing me off as I am very **** about scuff marks.

Net/Net: This is the best Corvette experience I have had (not just the fact that I got to see it get built with my son) but the "coolness" of all the features. I was telling Dan that when I did the R8C back in 2001 there was about three things to go over in the orientation and nothing was really new from the 1998 that I had. I'm into tech -- as much as the quality of the ride and track worthiness -- and the tech in this seems pretty impressive. I'm having a blast driving it. I just leave the tunes off until I go figure out how to address the issue above -- but then listening to that exhaust note is better than tunes anyways.

Day 2:

Just shy of 500 miles driven in 7 hours.

* Seats: Still have the left bottom bolster making me think my wallet is in my pants. I think I am too use to previous Corvettes not having any support at all. Still love the suede insert and haven't notice any abnormal wear.

* Oil: First full tank of gas showed no loss of oil. Get the 500 change on Tuesday (not really on the road again till Tuesday).

* Economy mode: Since I was on the open highway I thought I would rotate through all the settings and see how they worked and felt like on the open road. My wife has a 2009 Honda Pilot Touring with the cylinder deactivation. A light comes on when some of the cylinders are deactivated and it is impossible to know when that happens. With the Corvette, on the highway at speed, there is a jerk when it goes from v4 to v8. There is a nifty light in the DIC that says when it is in 4 cylinder or 8 cylinder mode.

* DIC/HUD: After spending 7 hours with it on the road, I've pretty much rotated through everything. I really, really like the gear indicator. Given that I was up and downshifting 5th through 7th to keep my RPM's at different rates during the break-in period, it was really nice to see that I was going from 7th to 6th to 5th and not hitting some other gear at speed. I also like the life time engine hours and RPM's. Having NAV (when not using my iPhone's NAV) was really nice to see the directions in the HUD. I also really liked the speed limit posting. I was very surprised at how accurate it was. It was more accurate than my Passport Max 2! On the highway I pretty much defaulted to the HUD that had posted speed limit, my speed and what gear I was attempting to go into.

* Vented Seats: It was damn hot in eastern KY, S IL and MO. Those vented seats work great.

* HVAC: Worked flawlessly in auto mode. Never was too cold or too hot. Just 69 the whole time.

* Exhaust note: I really got to test this out a lot today as I was pretty much always accelerating and decelerating for break-in. To defer the mundane, I would loop through each setting and listen to the exhaust going from 50 up to 100 in different gears. Sport still wins for the meanest, but even when I was in touring or economy (I didn't accelerate in weather mode) the note sounded good, particularly when in 5th and going from say 60 to 80.

* Weather mode: I got hit in rain and T-Storms so I thought I would try out the weather mode. I can't say that I really noticed anything different in that mode vs. touring mode. I guess that is what is supposed to happen and one should only feel/see a difference if they are losing control via hydroplaning or something.

* Nav / Smartphone Nav: I started out with the factory nav to see how it would compare to Apple's Nav. The trip from BG to Ozark, MO is supposed to be a little over 7 hours. Just starting by having to type in the address vs. telling Siri to take me to my Aunt's house seemed so archaic, but after doing that factory Nav was telling me that I would be needing only 6:11 of travel time. At first I thought wow -- factory nav has some route that shaves 50 minutes off the trip! NOT. I left factory nav on for almost and hour and when I switched over to Apple Nav it was telling me that I have 6:49 minutes left before I would get there. I've never had a nav system continually increase my time to get to a place unless it was accounting for traffic. However, I did like the integration of weather into the factory nav. As I was coming to the T-Storms, the forward facing view on the factory nav had lighting and black clouds in the horizon. That's cool, but would rather have my total travel time and destination time to be accurate out of the gate. As I stated above, having the nav in the HUD is really nice. Never thought I would like it so much. There was a bunch of places on major roads that I didn't have cell coverage and eventually the cache expired on Apple Nav and I had to go to factory nav to still get directions. Net/Net of the two days that I have owned the C7, both days both nav systems failed me and I needed the other one. So, particularly on this 3K trip, I'm really glad that I have the factory nav.

* Car Play: This was the feature I was most looking forward to using. When I was taking R8C delivery, my NCM rep told me that CarPlay required hard wired connection. I had just purchased a bunch of short lightning cables to work with pro mount and was looking forward to not having a lighting cable go into the arm rest. But he was right and you do have to use a USB connection. He said that the 2017's will support BT CarPlay.

My first experience with CarPlay was really nice. Nav on the center display was more informative than the factory nav, but the graphics were not as good as factory nav in my opinion. I was thrilled that TuneIn radio was on there as that is what I use when I ride my bike into work. The sound coming from TuneIn was orders of magnitude better than any XM station.

The problem with Carplay is that there are not enough apps that support Carplay. If I am going to stream, I would really rather use my Amazon Music streaming service -- but that doesn't work in Airplay. I would really have liked to use Waze and my Passport iOS application. While I can use them, I can't use them and Carplay at the same time. The second you try to use an app from the phone, the nav screen goes back to the menu. What I really wanted to do was have apple nav on the console screen and have Waze running on the iPhone. Can't do that. Part of the reason is that Apple Nav is having the directions on the main monitor and the detail instructions are being displayed on your iPhone. That's pretty ingenious actually if you have your iPhone mounted. Today I had not got around to using my Pro Mount so the phone just sat on top of the cup holders area. I only discovered the second screen function because my kid kept telling me the directions after the one displayed on the main console and I finally asked him how he knew that and he showed me the phone.

I've never had to hard boot my iPhone 6+ since they started shipping. I was switching apps in CarPlay and all of a sudden the console froze. I thought it might have something to do with sketchy internet as I was listening to TuneIn. I switched over to XM to get tunes and kept coming back to the carplay part to see if it was going to start working again. Eventually I went to the iPhone and the screen would not come on. I had to hard boot it. I'm pretty sure that something in CarPlay crashed the iPhone. So my dilemma, I want to have Waze, Amazon Music and Escort Live apps in CarPlay. I suspect that Apple just has to convince developers to want to write for CarPlay interface. Until that happens it is great to have the integration, but more than just the <10 apps that are supported.

* Audio: There are huge differences in quality of audio based on the input source. XM is the worst, I have to almost bring the bass down to nothing to have acceptable sound. The system needs to have different tone settings based on input. I had to change tone whenever I would hop between TuneIn and XM.

* Steering Wheel: ~ 7 hours of driving and having the D steering wheel is really nice, my legs have more room.

* XM / Infotainment: I could not find a way to just look at stations by genre. I haven't had time to read through the manual, but I had 7 hours to try to naturally figure out how to do that and I couldn't. So if it is there, discoverability is an issue. At any rate, I never can memorize the channel numbers. I just want to cycle through the stations of a particular genre like I can on other XM cars.

The above was top of mind for 7 hours of driving and a little under 500 miles. These are my impressions. I'm 100000% glad I bought the car, would still buy the car, still love looking at the car, still love driving the car. The stuff I mention above is pretty nit picky, but I just wanted to share my opinion on the 2016. I didn't receive the car first from the other 2016's, but I bet I am in the top 10 for most miles and I bet in two weeks I will be in the #1 slot for 2016's. I'm essentially putting the amount of miles I put on the Vette in two weeks that I usually put on it in a year.

My next big drive day is this coming Tuesday. Ozark, MO to Chicago. So I will post then if there are any new impressions.

Default 2016 Z51 First Impressions for start of 3K trip

Sounds like you're enjoying it!

Please post if you come up with a good mount for the iPhone 6+.

If you can do without a cup holder, the 6+ will fit in that compartment nicely.

Enjoy!

I bought this one before I flew out.

http://www.proclipusa.com/phone-hold..._leftorright=0

It was based on other members posts. I just installed it last night and I drove the car for about 30 minutes today. I didn't have the issue of my hand hitting it while I was moving into 7th gear. I had bought the additional part that will move the phone to the passengers side, but I don't need it.

I haven't used it enough in the car yet to have an opinion on it, but I will be 8 hours on the road tomorrow, so I will most likely have a strong opinion by then.
