I'll typically do the "most fingers wave" off the steering wheel or the "salute wave" that ends up looking like a ninja turtle saluting with his only three fingers.
As for the OP's experience, the thumbs up response was likely done out of respect as a "nice car, man." But I too prefer to return the wave with a wave.
Save the wave.

This is one of the fun things I've found since we got our C7 - all series seem to acknowledge each other. My son and I were out for a drive last Saturday - 20+ mile stretch of very curvy 4 lane canyon road - just made for our Z51. We were on the way back, going down canyon with top off and windows down, when we passed a beautiful CR C7 top-down vert going the opposite direction, up canyon. Let us just say that both were traveling at a rate of speed that made it impossible to 'do the wave' because we passed each other before we could get a hand up to wave.

PS to those who are concerned about traveling fast on public roads. I'm one who is pretty darn conservative that way. This was 4 lanes, divided by a low concrete barrier, no side roads for cars to enter on, and I always slow it down when coming up on traffic (but it was early morning and not much traffic. ). I love the canyon roads around here.

I've gotten thumb's up a few times, but only once from a 'vette owner. I had a C7 pull up beside me on the highway, beep the horn, and give me a thumbs up. Since he had his roof on and windows up, I guess it would have been hard for him to wave.

I've also gotten thumb's up from non 'vette owners. Last weekend, heading to a car show, a VW Jetta pulled up next to me, and the driver honked and gave me a thumbs up. Today, waiting for a traffic light to turn, a guy in a Camaro in the next lane and a car ahead of me rolled down his window, honked, and looked back at me and gave me a thumbs up.

As far as the wave.....

A wave with your hand on the wheel isn't a wave, and it's almost invisible to drivers coming the other way.Especially if your window is up, I can't see your hand on the wheel. If that's the "Corvette wave" no wonder I see so few drivers "waving".

More often than not, I do not get a wave back when I wave. Many owners are just not aware of the tradition or just don't want to be bothered.

I have been a jeep owner for a while as well and we all wave too. Same for bikes. Everything I drive I'm waving

Better a thumb than no acknowledgement. I hate when I wave to a fellow Vette, make eye contact, and get nothing back.

To each their own.

Sometimes get a headlight flash. It's all good to me as long as it is a positive acknowledgement.

The Wave! It all started back in the early C-1 Days, VETTE owners would flash their headlights at one another when approaching. Then came the C-2, could not do that anymore, hence the wave. ITS ALL GOOD!

I give a thumbs up as an acknowledgement-easier than a wave with its many variations.

I had a Jeep for the past 3 years and let me tell you it got stupid after a while with all the jeeps out there. I kid you not some days I counted 12-20 waves. I sold the friggin last month but my wrists are in top shape from all the waving. The Vette community is not nearly as bad.

Been driving vettes for 45 years and at first I always waved. As time went on, fewer and fewer waves were returned so eventually I just stopped too. Now if I see someone wave first, I will definitely wave back. The community needs to be informed of this great tradition I think.

What's the big deal about a wave any way, when I'm on the bike it's a wave or it's a fist or it's the index finger to the ground.

The big deal is that it is a tradition, it has been around since the first Corvettes and it would sure be nice to keep it going.

I get mostly waves. My wave tends to be stationary (not moving much from side to side). I need to be careful when waving; otherwise, it can be mistaken for a kind of salute that was in vogue in a certain European country during the 1930's.

Same for me. Seems like some are either completely uninterested or too vain to acknowledge that someone else drives a car just like his/hers.....

A wave is a special recognition owners share.

Although a wave may be the preferred option, I believe any acknowledgement is sufficient. Thumbs up, peace sign, hang ten sign, head nod or even headlight flash. As long as it's a positive notion it's good with me

Some of the problem, relative to the C7, is that I suspect many drivers haven't seen enough to recognize them. I get a ton of waves in my GS, but not so much when in the Stingray.
