What is the row of lights across the top of the Track mode display?

What is the row of lights across the top of the Track mode display?
I have seen a couple of lights on both ends of the row, flash green, but have not observed other color changes.
Do the lights change to indicate approaching red line, or are they for some other purpose?
Have searched owner's manual, but can find no reference.
Oops! Just found it... they are shift lights... but they are so close to the top of the display, I never noticed them..

Does the track mode on the 1LT, the 2LT and the 3LT all work the same and show the same data and graphs?
Does it make a difference between a M7 or A8?
