Prime example of the madness. My local dealer has an Arctic White 2016 Z51 3LT on his lot that actually has an MSRP of $83,905...and has graciously marked it down $4,000 to $79,905...but its still a Stingray that costs as much as an entry level Z06...largely from what I consider eye candy options other than the seats, MSRC, and A8.

-------------------------------------------
Pricing
Destination Charge $995.00
Installed Options
Competition Sport bucket seats $2,495.00
Visible carbon fiber weave hood insert $1,995.00
Visible carbon-fiber roof panel with body-color surround $1,995.00
Battery Protection Package $100.00
Carbon Flash Badge Package $100.00
Carbon fiber interior trim $995.00
Magnetic Selective Ride Control™ $1,795.00
Red-painted brake calipers $595.00
8-speed paddle shift transmission $1,725.00
19" front/20" rear, Black aluminum wheels $495.00
Carbon Flash-painted rear spoiler and outside mirrors $100.00
Cargo mat, reversible with Stingray® logo, Genuine Corvette® Accessory $205.00
Cargo shade, Genuine Corvette® Accessory $170.00
Z51 3LT $9,745.00
Total Options $22,510.00
MSRP* $83,905.00
For $22,510 you can get a base 2015 Camaro.

Everyone knows red is faster, which makes red calipers worth the surcharge, but I can't imagine paying that much for black. It has no such kinetic advantage.

Like a vacuum cleaner to the wallet...
Also, the EYT option (carbon flash badges) costs $100 extra for the Stingray which has chrome badges standard, but the chrome badges cost $100 extra for the Z06 which has carbon flash standard. Beware the giant sucking sound. It can come in many directions when building an options list.

Is that because they're heavier, seeing how black is the absence of light?

Hmm...never thought about it that way before. Good point. It's amazing how many problems get solved here.

Because people will pay it. This is how car companies make their money. They make a little $ on base cars, but big $$$ on options. It's the same reason that a hamburger cost as a restaurant may be reasonable at $6-8, but then they charge you $2 for that coke which cost them $.05. That's where they make most of their profit.
