Never had a dash cam before and I'm looking for some recommendations from anyone one the forum. It will be primarily used for a possible collision witness. Any of you that have one, I would like to hear either your negative or positive on a particular unit. Also, how it is displayed will have some bearing on my decision. Cecil.............

I don't have one in our C7, but our other vehicles have the Lukas Blackbox. I have one 7900 ACE and another 7900 ARA. Very happy with both of them. The Ace fits right behind the rear view mirror on my GMC truck and the ARA fits 90% behind the mirror in the Jetta.

I am sure I will get another Lukas for the 'vette. Just need to decide which one, or do I upgrade one of our daily drivers.

I am using the Garmin Dash Cam 20 for the same reason. I picked it up at BJ's and it works well.

I myself got the G1WH though, I like the slightly larger field of view.

I have the Mini 0805 dash cam installed next to my V1 radar detector. Works great and has a LCD video screen.

If I am missing the mark on the reply, I'll apologize up front. Today marked the first day I used the PDR--almost have 1500 miles on my 2015 Z51.
The picture quality was excellent, and with a 32GB card, you can record 8 hours of video. Admittedly, there is no audio. After poking around on the related threads, some CF members use PDR for the purpose you're interested in.

I think the biggest issue with using PDR as dashcam is remembering to turn it on! Dedicated dashcams automatically start recording so you never have to remember to turn it on.

Many people, including myself, would love the option for the PDR to record all of the time.

The PDR is a wonderful tool for use as a dashcam. Isn't sound recorded too unless you are in valet mode?

However, it would be wonderful to have a continuous rolling recording the way some dashcams do where they overwrite the first clip automatically when they fill up the memory card. With the cheap ones like the G1W/G1WH, they record in increments of several minutes each (providing overlaps too) that can then be overwritten chronologically automatically when the SD card fills up without overwriting the whole card's contents at once. It's very useful for daily use as a dashcam. And as the other commenter suggested, I wish there was an option where I could automatically record every time the car turned on.

Also, isn't there a 99 minute limit per session on PDR videos - I read this on the Corvette forums somewhere? I'm curious, and since I don't have a C7 hope someone can answer this: What happens when it hits 99 minutes even if you have a 128GB/256GB card in there? Does it stop recording and wait for the user to ask it to record again? Or does it just end the first session and start a new video recording automatically?

I use a GS8000L 2.7" Full HD 1080P Car DVR HDMI Camera Video Recorder Dash Cam G-sensor in all my cars (5 total). These work great, are sold for under $25.00 on eBay. Uses a micro sd card (not supplied) and in the C7 the dash cam will turn on and off with the ignition. There is no need to spend allot of $$ on a dash cam. Once you change the language to English it is very easy to set the menu. Records in 1080P. I use a loop recording that records in 10 minute intervals. A 8GB or 16 GB micro SD card is all you need to buy.

Audio is recorded along with video (except in valet mode). Granted, the audio quality is about as bad as it gets (I just hear drone/engine hum) but it does 'work'.

Might just have to go with one of these as I don't see GM modifying the PDR to be a decent dash cam anytime soon. I see them for under $20 with free shipping.

After reading numerous reviews and comparisons I decided to go with the Street Guardian. It has a built in GPS as well as motion detectors so it may be left on to record events while the vehicle is parked. It provides a very high quality video image. It shows your GPS location as well as speed on the video as well.

The GS8000L for under $25.00 vs the Panorama for $248.00 is a steal of a deal. I have never had any problems with the 5, I have currently.

The GS8000L has already done me well. I was stopped by a local police officer who stated I failed to stop at a stop sign. I told the officer immediately after approaching the vehicle, "I have a dash cam mounted in my front windshield just as you have in your police car. The camera is on and has recorded the stop". The police said nothing, walked back to his car, and came back and provided a warning to stop longer at a stop sign. He then moved on.

In reference to post #10 and #15 .... I thought it would be best to present the quality of my dash cam. I have downloaded via youtube a 3 minute video segment from the GS8000L Dash Cam. Once again, cost is under $23.00 on eBay. Great HD 1080P quality and audio. The audio on the video is direct within the cockpit/cabin of the C7 and my USB micro thumb drive connected inside the radio screen.

When the GS8000L dash cam first came to the market they were priced around $59.99. No need to spend hundreds of dollars on a GoPro or any other higher priced video recording device.

For under $23.00 I don't how you can beat this camera. I have 5 of them mounted in all of our vehicles.

Let me know your thoughts. I have my dash cam set for 3 minute loop recording using a 8GB micro sd chip.

It you have it set for a 3 minute loop, wouldn't it have already overwritten the stop by the time the cop came back?

I use a 8GB sd micro card in the dash cam. The 8Gb card will provide about 35 to 40 - 3 minute videos. So after 3 minutes, the dash cam starts a new recording, but not over the previous recording.

Using a larger card like a 16GB sd card, you could record up to 70 to 80 - 3 minute videos before the dash cam starts to record over the 1st video recorded.

Once the dash cam records the 40-3 (8GB card) minute videos, it will start to record over the 1st video then work its way to #40 and start all over.

I pulled the micro sd card out today to download the video presented on youtube so all CF members that have an interest in the dash cam thread could see the quality of the image and audio. Many CF members might not believe my comments about this GS8000L dash cam, so I thought best to download an actual loop from my personal camera in my C7. As you can see in the video the date is 8/22/2015, so the dash cam has not recorded over this 3 minute loop yet.

Today, I cleared the card via formatting the micro sd card which then erases all 3 minute recordings. If I would have gotten a ticket for the stop sign, I would have simply downloaded that event on my computer when I arrived home and saved it for a future court date with the officer to dispute the violation.

If you had an event like a collision or accident of any type, or recorded another incident not involving you, the 3 minute looping provides plenty of time for the user to download the incident on a personal computer, laptop etc.

Hope this explains the loop feature.
