Accidents/Damage at Spring Mountain
Is anyone aware of a participant who was found responsible for damage to a car while participating in one of the Corvette Driving Schools? I am aware of the option to purchase additional insurance but based on my understanding of the type of driving during the intro 2 day schoole I have not read about any incidents that lead to damage found to be the responsibility of the driver. At this point I am leaning toward not purchasing the additional insurance. I also plan to talk to USAA to see if my automobile policy provides any coverage. I know it does for rental cars but probably not for a HPDE. Thanks.

My other statement was no but that was from my OLD agent told me if car was on any type of track & they got wind of it would not be covered. But the car would not be covered if a drag race track in the car..

I promise you USAA won' provide coverage. When they found out I tracked my BMW M3 a few years ago, they asked me if I was going to track every car I bought for the next 5 years. If you have any HPDE experience and know what you can and can't do, don't worry about the insurance. Most of the time is spent lead follow and you would have to be really unlucky (stupid) to go off track. Of course there is always the mechanical failure/flat tire that could ruin your day. You are in Nevada, roll the dice.

Check out this thread. Some good info in here.
I did not purchase it, especially after the women working the desk said only one person ever went over the deductible, and there was gross negligence involved in that case. They also only had 2 run-offs they could remember, and those didn't even meet the bought-down deductible of $3k.

When was at Spring Mountain September 2014, I believe I was the only student who purchased the additional (reduced deductible) insurance. There were no accidents during that 2-day session. I would say the chance of an accident was minimal. I just felt "better" having purchased the additional coverage.

Out of 19 in our class, I believe only one purchased the insurance. There have been at least a dozen other threads on this subject over the past 2 years and they all conclude the same - pass on the insurance.

I didn't buy it. In my class, the last session on the last day one guy went off into the gravel, but I didn't hear anything about any damage.
They said they would do a thorough inspection of the car to make sure there was no gravel in the brakes, etc., before they used that car again, but nothing about it being considered "damaged".

I was there in Oct 2015 and did not purchase insurance deductible buy down and there were no issues with any driver or car for the 2 days. Day one had rain and puddles on the track and we drove carefully, limited to 80 mph. Day two was dry and we were off to the races. Our lead instructor said there was only one car damaged in his 12 years at the facility. The instructors watch over all very carefully and and an excellent intuition to your driving abilities and manage you accordingly. It was an unbelievable experience and hope you enjoy yours.

Thank everyone. I'll pass on the insurance as I do have HPDE experience albeit in BMWs. Looking forward to the opportunity to drive a C7 at greater than legal highway speeds to appreciate its capabilities.

You will be tracking your own C7 or one of the SM classes C7?

In our class of 22 drivers I believe 15 of us purchased the $200.00 extra insurance. Was it necessary? Not for 19 of us. Three drivers ended up losing it on the course and headed into the sand and gravel. One driver did it twice.
I was there when the weather was 105 degrees plus and the temperature on the track was even higher. So we didn't have to drive cautiously or careful. For the majority of drivers in my course we all drove the cars like we stole them. Its a wonder that more drivers didn't find themselves off the track and in the gravel and sand.
Have a great time at the school and remember to leave nothing on the track. Go for it.

rmorin1249, when are you going? I will be there next week. I debated the same thing and decided I will pass on the insurance. I will call my agent and ask about driving schools, but there reply will not change my decision about the optional insurance.

Feb. 10-11. I'm not taking the insurance as of now. I doubt I will change my mind.

I'm going on 12/28 and 12/29. I was told when I booked that I'm responsible for the first $10k in damage and if I go off the track I will be responsible for paying for an alignment if needed.

Good information for those attending the course. Sounds like not taking the additional insurance is the way to go, depending on your comfort level.

Just my two cents..... I purchased the $200.00 insurance and didn't need it. My philosophy was to minimize risk exposure. I would rather give them $2200.00 versus $8000.00.

If you are buying a $70,000 you should not even miss the $200 for more than about ten seconds. I'd buy it, but then I know how competitive I am. I would not be going to drive like a little old lady driving to church.

If there was a crystal ball that could tell you the future about your experience at Spring Mountain before the fact, then you would have your answer. That is why it is called insurance. Sure, the SM record seems to be great, but one never knows. That is also why they are called accidents. Check with your personal insurance carrier and see if they cover you in case of accident and you are injured, etc. Because Spring Mountain is pegged as a driving school, that is how they get around it. But I was told you are responsible for the $8000 damage, if it occurred. Have fun and enjoy the ride !
