Trade-In
How does it work with forum dealers if you want to buy one off the lot or order one if you have a trade-in?

Different dealers have different ways of handling it. You need to locate several dealers that you feel comfortable with doing a purchase, and ask them directly how to handle a trade in. Some dealers don't want to mess with a trade in, others welcome it.

From my experience, you are better off selling it on your own than trading it in with a dealer. Sold my 2007 vette right here on the forum for sale section in 1 day. My previous vette I let a reputable used car dealer put it on his lot. It was there less than 30 days and he sold it for the price I wanted and of course made a profit.

Well, every time i worked with MacMaulkin,we just did it over texting.Email pictures etc.I don't think KERBECK takes trades anymore...or maybe they do and don't sell them, idk. Either way, email pics, honest description and lots of back and forth.

Kerbeck still takes trades but sends them to the auction.

forum dealers are not going to offer as much as carmax based on how they are discounting their new stock. Plus Carmax you can price it out in Missouri and sell it to Carmax on east coast as long as it is in a set window, can't remember I think 10 days. It is a great place to start with a bid, then you have a guarantee of what you will get even if you drove it to dealer you are trading to (assuming there is a carmax in the area)

Try autotrader.com. In my area, mid-Atlantic, you can get a cash offer from several used car dealers. If your car is really nice, Carmax may pay more. Trading it may work out best financially if your state charges sales tax based on the trade difference.

My experience was with a local dealership. CF or not, they'll try to low ball you to see if your a sucker or a sucker with money.
The dealership I dealt with made me laugh out loud, literally, at their first offer for my trade. I stood up, shook the salesman's hand and told him to call me when he got his heart right with Jesus.
For two weeks, they called me every day. One day they called me six times!! The day of the "finalizing" of the deal, they tried to manipulate the numbers so I walked out. The next day, they played nice and I drove home my '14.
Moral of the story. Do your deal. Don't be a sucker. The car is in it's third year of production and there's plenty of new and used models out there.
Good luck.

Went through Mike Furman at Criswell for the '15 Z51. Did the entire deal over the phone. He gave me an extremely fair trade on the C6 I traded. Enough so that I drove up from TX to do it. Made for a really great mini vacation.

I have heard that Mike does that - he even puts that detail in his weekly posts. Check with the dealers, both local and on the forum, than go with whatever turns out to be an acceptable offer.

Dealer trade in
Some dealers do this. I sold my car to one of club members we processed the paperwork and money thru the dealer thus it was a trade. Ordered car from dealer . Paid the difference on sales tax. Saved over $4000 in sales tax.
One dealer incenuated that there was something illegal about it. B.S.
BOY THIS AUGHT TO STIR THE POT.

I went through a local dealer and the salesman was up front about the trade. He told me that they would low ball me and that the tax advantage would not be that advantageous. He suggested Car Max or outright selling, as they ( the dealer ) would add about 5500 bucks to my trade offer and make a bunch off the car. Some dealers just wholesale the cars or take them to auctions rather than deal with messing with used cars, having to certify them or recondition them to make a few bucks.
I sold it out right and did OK, more than made up for the loss in the tax situation. Although selling out right can be a pain dealing with the phone calls and such, but a good way to sell it is here on the forum. You get PM's and while taking up a bit of your time to answer, you don't get a bunch of tire kickers hassling you. My experience with selling via the forum was quite good.
However you go I wish you luck.

If you are looking to buy a new "heavily discounted" Stingray and then think that same dealer is going to give you "top dollar" for your trade-in, be prepared to be disappointed.
In this case you will do better with a private sale or possibly CARMAX.
But back to your question the two times I bought "long distance" we handled the entire deal over the Internet with the caveat that the trade-in quote given was contingent upon their final inspection.
For me both transactions went exactly as quoted, to the penny.
Good luck

Dealers here in TX do it all the time. Totally legal and above board. They are more than glad to do it as the person that buys your trade becomes a future trade up sale.
