Just be careful what you buy. For the Porsche Cayenne we had one key FOB was coming apart. Did not want to pay Porsche their ridiculous price so bought a case cheap from eBay. Said it came in two parts and I could swap the electronics and key from the old one. Sounded simple. However you had to use plastic epoxy and hold it together with PC board loose and spring actuated key with no easy way to put that all together!
When we traded the car they asked me for the other key FOB after we negotiated and brought the new BMW home. Brought in my duct taped key FOB and the new case and said perhaps your mechanics can assemble. Salesman said "don't worry, the new owner can buy a new one if they want it!"

I'm not sure if that comes with the metal key, but it didn't indicate it did or did not. Then who knows if they want to charge you to program it or they would do it for free.
There are four versions, as listed above. Coupe manual, coupe auto, convertible manual and convertible auto. The Auto's have the remote start button, the convertibles the top button, the convertible auto has both.

You can program a new fob yourself. The instructions are in the owners manual. You will have to pay to get the metal key cut (assuming it's included).

They are not compatible.

I tried to program an extra C6 fob that I had, and not only would it not program, it temporarily, partially disabled the good C7 fob. It would remote start, but I could not get in the car, or start the car from the inside. Fortunately, after the car timed out ~30 minutes, the C7 fob started acting normally again.

Not really fair because I gave them 2 keys for the C6 I traded in But it was the best offer I could get out of them.

I made them put it on the "We Owe" so I do have it in writing that they have to sell me this key for their cost, but now they've given me the cost and I'm not sure I believe them. The price they gave me is $150. What do you think?

Take them to small claims court, its listed on the "owe" sheet they better pay up.

Bought a few over the years (benz, bmw, toyota, chevy) never had a problem. I actually never even opened them up took it to the dealer to have them flash it. Most did it for free, some charged $20-30.

guess it varies for everyone.

I'm pretty sure on the owe sheet it says "new FOB at dealer cost" what would you sue for exactly?

All I can say is, be glad its not a Mercedes key fob.

If you buy a used or ebay new one, there is a procedure to program it to the car. Involves turning mechanical key at trunk a certain number of times and putting key in steering wheel hole.

Ebay $60 shipped manual C7 fob (with internals).

When you get your new RKE, there is a DIY/FAQ on this site that gives instructions for RKE issues and programming

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c7-g...s-and-rke.html

It includes a detailed step/action table to walk you through testing and programming.

Thanks, but this looks like ots for an auto since it has the remote start button. It also says Japan market. Does that matter?

I'd be willing to take it and just ignore the remote start button, I suspect that would work..

Either way they made enough money on the deal that they could have given you the second fob.

I got two cost figures from my dealer. The RKE was $126.23 and the blank key was $35.09, plus tax. I bought a used RKE on eBay for $49.95 and a blank key for $6.99. Two different sources but both included shipping.
Open your case, note the 8 digit GM PN, then Google the PN. You'll get a range of new/used prices.
I don't know yet the cost to have the new key blank cut for my VIN.
Good luck in programming the new RKE.

For what it's worth. A GM issue. I had a 2010 Cadillac CTS. I took a FOB to the dealer to have the battery replaced. They replaced the battery and gave me the FOB which was not back together right. I told them it was not right and I would not accept it with a large gap in the case. They could not get it back together so gave me two new FOB's programmed for my car. Apparently you cannot buy a new FOB and program it. You have to do 2 FOBs. This was Cadillac in 2014.
