Crass title. Everyone should be applauding the attempt to save our environment. Think about the next guy and consider paying it forward.

Solar power is becoming the standard in many industries. Perhaps not for the total energy demand of manufacturing but it is definitely quickly becoming an addition to save on the cost of manufacturing a product.

Good move by GM.

Heavy Gooberment subsidy on all that "alternative energy" stuff. Corporate welfare. Just like the ethanol scam. I feel the Gooberment reaching deep in my pocket. If GM had to pay the full load it would not been so built. Or perhaps part of the Gooberment bailout to appease his holiness.

It's a start in the right direction. I just wonder when the Corvette will get a battery and electric motor?

Anyone still contesting the legitimacy of the carbon problem and linking it to a political agenda is ignorant to the facts. Political, religious and special interest groups along with major oil companies and oil rich nations recognize that something needs to done. It is an everybody involved solution and every effort does make a difference regardless of motivation. I applaud GM and OUR Government in taking these steps.

Meh. Of all of the corporate welfare.. this seems almost silly to pick on.

I mean, the fuel you use in your cars? There's never been a bigger corporate welfare program. To add insult to injury, the profits are shipped to the middle east where a number of Saudi families fund attacks against us.

Oh, given that, it almost seems like very wise policy move to sustainable energy - we are, to some extent - at war with most OPEC nations.

At first I agreed with you, as a fierce hater of the nanny state and left wing paternalism. However, any subsidy that helps to cut the nuts off of OPEC has my approval.

Default C7 Corvette Revving Up to Go Green

General Motors is breaking ground on an 850-kilowatt solar array at Corvette’s Bowling Green Assembly plant in Kentucky, which will help power the production of the C7.

All I see is the price of the corvette going up for a major eye-sore and waste of land. Until they can really harness the power of sun (isn't it still about 11% of energy actually converted into usable)....solar panels will continue to cost more than they can yield.

Actually, commercially available rooftop solar cells are reaching 22%: http://www.greentechmedia.com/articl...anel-Revisited.

Cost of solar vs the value of the electricity produced is affected by far more than just the panel efficiency. Like most items, higher volume production results in lower cost. The cost of electricity from the local grid is also an obvious factor. The higher the cost of traditional electric generation, the quicker solar pays for itself. Energy prices continue to rise. Even without gov't subsidies, solar in "sunny" states can produce net savings.

Nice to see somebody post some facts that are actually true. While using solar panels at a car factory might be more showmanship than anything else the technology has its place and frankly home solar setups are now cost-effective in many parts of the country. ROI may be 10 years but how many have lived at the same address for much longer than that? Conventional power plants are only 35 percent or so efficient so solar is catching up. Hardly "gubbermint" welfare. Should one want to see shameful handouts, just look at the free ride the energy industry gets out of public lands.

I have no problem with the US breaking the need to buy from OPEC.
