If I take the car to redline the shift lights light up and when I'm done and just cruising the lights stay lit. Why?

It's probably in the manual but it does the same with the Sport display as well. The lights wrap around the the round tach. I have hit red line a few times and had the yellow come up and it seems to stay on for a minute or so.

when I was drag racing I did not pay attention to my shift lights redlining. Then the shift light all across start flashing blue. I lost all control of shifting to any gears (only on neutral). I had to Immediately cost to the side of the road. What could cause this?
