So I shouldn't mention that chrome wheels are cheesy and ruin the brand and taint a brand new very successful model ?
I'm a black wheel guy, but I see no need to be snarky about another person's taste just because it's different than mine. I'm a long time hot rodder and custom car guy who competed nationally for years and won lots of championships including a General Motors Design Award at SEMA with my 1969 Camaro.That being said, the most important factor in customizing is picking a theme and sticking with it rather than bolting on a bunch of mis-matched accessories. Chrome wheels can work nicely with certain colors and equipment combinations as long as they are well done and integrated with other modifications. Accordingly, I've seen some nice looking C7's with chrome wheels that didn't look dated at all.
I am well over 35 but I call them wheels as the "rim" is just a part of the wheel so that kind of tells you what camp I am in For me, it all depends on the color of the car. Some wheels (Chrome/Polished/Black) just go better with specific colors. JMHO. I went into the dealership to look at a red and shark grey car and walked out with the blue with black wheels. I felt that combo looked better but to each their own. While I do have chrome wheels on my truck, the car will stay with black
When I was young, we drove around with no hubcaps, just black steel wheels because it was the trend. Now older, I like chrome, but on some C7s, I think black or machined face looks awesome. On my Lime Rock green, however, I think black would not look very good, so I have 2016 chrome wheels.
I'm 44 and like chrome when and where appropriate.
I have a 2016 Mazda CX-5 that came with very expensive high end black rims. I bought an OEM pair of the lesser model silver painted rims and sold my black ones.
Not sure why - I'm not a fan of the murdered out look. But I do know a group of my younger friends that loves black - the more the better.
We have owned 12 Corvettes and 7 didn't have chrome wheels (had painted or polished) and 5 had chrome wheels to include my current 2015 Z51 coupe. My wife's current 2010 SS Camaro has Foose's black powder coated wheels and it is our first (and definitely last) car to have black wheels.
Now we need a poll on how many owners over 35 and under 35 actually like Black wheels.
Just because they don't like chrome, does not mean they like black.
I don't like chrome OR black wheels.
31 and hate all things chrome (Z06 grill and carbon flash badges going on in spring). Silver is even too much for me, just picked up a set of black Z51 wheels for spring :P
IMO from a styling point of view be it custom or show or stock , chrome , polished, or machined wheels will always look better than dark, dull, subdued. That's from 60 years of resto, custom, and show quality dealings with cars bought , sold, and shown.
When I bought the C5 it had silver painted rims. I swapped those for a set of OEM polished rims and absolutely loved the look. So did the mechanic that changed out the tires, and he is under 35.
I just traded for a C7 and it has silver painted wheels. So far, I like it the way it is. I might go to chrome, but really don't like the black wheels. That's why Corvette makes different options, different strokes for different folks. Works for me.
33. IMHO it depends on the car color. on my c7 i have black on midnight race blue and love it. If i ever change the wheels i will most likely go with black. as i like the dark look. I haven't seen any midnight race with chrome/polished. interested if anyone has that combo and how it looks.
