For all the Top Guns and Vets with one "T"

My good friend Lt. Col. Bob Marks flew 105s and F4s for the Air force in Vietnam and then at McGuire in the guard. He invited me for the Phantom Farewell when they were getting ready to transition to F-16s. he was very excited to be able to fly the Viper but then the base realignment hit and he ended up flying a tanker.
His motto was "I use to haul *** now I pass gas"
He let me help him preflight the F4 on his last flight, security wasn't happy with letting a civilian on the flight line.

I was on the Saratoga (CV-60) and Independence (CV-62) from 87-91. Our squadron was on the chucky V for the 94 West Pac, 95 Pineapple (WWII thing), and then 96 West Pac. I was a flight deck Corpsman while on carriers for the most part. I tried to upload a 10 minute vid but I cant get it to load properly. If you search "USS Carl Vinson WWII fly off" you will see a few vids.

To the Vets. Loved the F4's here in Austin after SAC left Bergstrom. In the sky all day long. We lived on the approach path to Bergstrom. Before SAC left remember the B-52's (BUFFs) rockin the neighborhood.

I flew the A-7B from USS FDR and the A-7E from USS America while with the Golden Warriors of VA-87, 1974 thru 1976.
The 'Rosey Boat' was built in 1944 and converted for jets years later. She sailed in a permanent list, the flight deck was cramped & the staterooms were hot, the water in the showers and the iced tea in the wardroom both smelled & tasted like JP-4, but no ship could launch more sorties at a faster clip.
After the America was decomissioned, she used to be tied up in Philly Navy Yard just a few hundred yards off the approach end of runway 27 at PHL. After the navy I was a captain for Delta and I often got to see her again, up close and personal, right before landing.
Great memories...

I love Naval Aviation, but here's what I flew in Vietnam, and also during my last tour in the Army as an instructor at Ft. Rucker:
After I switched over to the Coast Guard I ended up instructing for the Navy for 3 years in this - I really enjoyed my tour with the Navy!!:
I ended up retiring from the Coast Guard flying the HU-25 on SAR and Law Enforcement missions out of USCG Air Sta Miami:
After retiring from the military I got to fly for a couple airlines until the mandatory FAA retirement age.
Now I get to fly low at track events in my Vette!!! But I still do a lot of General Aviation flying.

Good life! Helicopters, airplanes, jets and vettes. What can be better.
I also flew Hueys, 58s and 21s in the Army, 23 years, retired '93. Now I fly vettes, so to speak.
