Way back in history the top speed rating was a V good for up to 149 MPH.

As cars got faster the Z rating was added 149+. When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

The Z rating is not used anymore as it has been superseded by the W, Y and now the (Y) rating.

Yep, quoted directly from TireRack. So, Z <> (Y).

Technically, and I mean this nicely that's incorrect. Z is the rating W, Y, and (Y) are sub ratings of Z. As previously there was no granularity over 149 MPH.

All W, Y, and (Y) tires have a Z on their sidewalk as the other ratings were not officially recognized.

Regardless, the A/S Michelins are Z (Y) rated tires.

Edit: http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....andard%20Model

Are the A/S tires that fit a base C7 (and C6). Notice the Z in the sizing, while the ratings are listed as (93Y) and (99Y)

The speed rating in the sizing was replaced in 1991 with a service description which is a combination of the load index and the speed rating.

Using the speed rating in the sizing information when it is a Z is insufficient when dealing with today's high speed tires. If you want a speed rating equivalent to the OEM tires, Z alone is not specific enough. It is the W, Y or (Y) designation that gives a more specific speed rating.

Yep, I never thought the intrusion/inclination alarm has ever been offered on a 1LT. The dash button has never been there, anyway.
