Went over 4,500 rpm on break in period.
I picked up my Z51 less than two weeks ago. I was cruising around the other day and I got on it a little too much I guess and when I looked at the tach I saw that I hit about 4800 rpm's and the yellow warning from 3500 -4500 on the tach disappeared . It's and auto and i thought it would upshift earlier but I must gave it a little too much pedal and she didn't shift. If I have an engine problem down the road will GM read the computer and see that I didn't follow the recommended break in procedure and void coverage?

You did not void your warranty. The break in procedure is recommended, not mandated.

I have the A6 and mistakenly moved the shift lever all the way down to M a few times early on. It never hit the rev limiter but the RPMs were up there a ways. I had the same concerns as you about the data being stored but talked myself out of that worry. However, the car used nearly a full quart of oil in the first 75% of oil life so then I started worrying about that being related to breaking the break in rules. The second oil fill went 85% without using a drop so now I only worry about normal stuff like putting on enough miles before the end of July to get a third free oil change.

Despite all of the obligatory verbage of the break-in recommendations from GM, it's actually good for your motor (once up to temp) for moderate throttle and high RPMs, especially if you let the engine brake from the higher RPMs to create negative pressure to help seat the compression rings. Babying the motor in the first 100-200 miles with lots of idling and minimal throttle risks glazing the cylinder walls which can lead to less HP and more oil consumption.
Not quite as easy with an automatic but I suspect you can force this with manual mode.

Thank fellas, that's great to know. It did seem illogical that something like that would void or hamper the warranty, otherwise GM would have simply had a rev limiter in place until she went over 500 miles. And I haven't sat idling for long periods either as don't like wasting fuel. I have also been using the paddle shifters to do some engine breaking to help vary the RPM's and to hear that awesome bellow from the NPP as I pull up to red lights Not exactly babying her either, getting less than 18 mpg per tank

Honestly, I made sure I approached that 'redline' every time I drove it. Break-in is the worst time to baby your call. Run it up and down the RPM bands, and let the engine brake itself. As mentioned that negative pressure is good for it.

Hey it's your car. It's up to you to follow the recommendations or not. In my opinion they are there for a reason. Some people don't believe it's important. Chevrolet spent good money to put that information in the system. Chevrolet is not known for spending money for no reason at all.

What you don't want to do is overheat the rings and take some of the temper out of the metal.
So while YMMV, short bursts of higher rpm's aren't bad, and it's also recommended to use some engine braking to slow down to make sure the rings get oiled. Also bad is high throttle low rpm lugging the engine.
