Hello, I was wondering...for those with non-nav. Is it possible to utilize CarPlay to have iPhone based NAV on the display, as well as hook up an external HDD for music?

Yes, you can use your iPhone's Map and Music apps through CarPlay and control through the Infotainment Screen.

But can you use both the iPhone for CarPlay (i.e. Really only want to use NAV), and then an external hard drive for playing just music?

Yes.
I use android auto from my phone for google maps and can also use another usb port for an ipod. Have played both simultaniously. Have also used my android auto maps while my wife played music from her iphone, I believe the music was controlled with the "media" button.

I got one of those mini usb drives and plugged it into the USB cubby, works great with my iPhone plugged in too. They're separate inputs so you're good to go!
