Default Dashcam experiences....

I have a 2014, which as most of you know does not have the PDR...

After a couple of close calls with d'bags running red lights in front of me, I have decided that it would probably be a good idea to have a dashcam running when I'm out and about....then there would not be a "You ran the red light", no "You ran the red light" BS in the event of an accident....it wold also be cool when I take a cross country road trip.

I read an article in the local rag about one sold by Cobra that does a front and rear 160 degree view, but never believe anything I read in that paper...

For those of you that have gone aftermarket on dashcams, what have been you experiences/recommendations?

TIA

I added a "Street Guardian" to our 2016 coupe. VERY HAPPY with it. I also bought a second power cord for our other car. It comes with two windshield mounts, so I have one in each car, and the unit comes right off the mount and connects to the already run, power cord for each car. I just start the car and don't even realize it's there, or on. I bought a 32 Gig data card for it and it should get about 4 hours of high def video and audio recording. It also came with a GPS cord which you can plug into it if you wish, which will then overlay on a map to show where you've been, speed, etc.....

After reading up on these, this unit seemed to get very high marks from everyone, for high quality video, and about all other metrics. A little pricy compared to others, but I'm ready to buy a second unit so I can just leave one in each car all the time.

This unit does NOT record what's going on behind you....... just in front, if mounted on the windshield.

Street Guardian SG9665GC V2
The sole US distributer for these is PIER 28.com....... I talked with the owner a couple of times, and he shipped immediately, as he promised. Also all my questions were answered......

That is a generic product branded by various companies. For example, look up Spy Tec A118-C.

Also there is a dedicated site for talking about dash cams, search for it and I am sure you'll find it.

I just put this in my daily driver, and if I like it, I'll put one in the Vette:

I also have the Street Guardian on both of my cars. I like the way the body mounts directly to the windshield instead of using the suction cup/mounting arm method. It's hidden behind the rearview mirror so you don't see it from the driving position. It gets its power from the mirror using a Blendmount wire tap, 12v to 5v step-down converter and USB cable.

I've had the Rexing V1 in my car for about six months now and just added the GPS upgrade. I really like them both. Also mounted my Valentine in the same place. If and when I get pulled over I can casually flip the visor down to cover it up. Beats saying "How do you like my new Blendmount, officer?"

The reason I went with the Street Guardian over the Rexing V1 was although they look the same, according to the dimensions given on Amazon the Street Guardian is half the size.

I have two goluk t1 wifi 1080p cameras with 64gb cards in each one facing front and one looking back. You would be surprised at what the rear camera picks up its almost as if some clowns start driving aggressively the moment they spot a sports car like a Corvette. I have mini vans and pick ups revving their engines when they pass me and recklessly switching lanes. I had considered the blackvue 650 cloud but am looking to eventually place front camera in pdr location and as I understand the blackvue doesn't auto rotate meaning it wouldn't fit in the pdr location without recording upside down. Parking mode is another interesting feature if it wasn't for my concerns about killing my battery I would add side cameras as well. Amazed at how little regard some people have for other people's property.

True, the bodies may be generic but different chipsets can be used.

Do you have any pics showing how it looks after the installation?

Do you have to turn on your dashcam each time or does it sense power on via ignition and start automagically?

It's all automatic. The dash cam turns on when you start the car and turns off when you turn the engine off.

Yes it's very easy getting power from the mirror by using a Blendmount MirrorTap, but most dash cams are 5v and power from the mirror is 12v, so you'll have to get a 12v>5v converter too.
