I don't like the "how much did it cost" question either. I fumble a little and say something like "surprising--it was less than the Audi I traded in"

As far as how much I paid....I like most tell them what they start at and when it ends up.....HOWEVER....if a kid wants to get into my Vert.....I let them....It's a Chevy after all and the smiles on their faces are priceless. I have done it many many times. If any of you do car shows you know how a kid's face lights up when they first spot your Vette. In some cases I even invite the kid or kids to sit in it much to the pleasure of their parents. And, if it is a "peoples choice" show.....it's a no brainer....

No, it's actually not rude to ask.
If the car owner has anxiety or lack of self confidence and won't reveal a price, it is rude to press the question.

But telling me the price you paid does not violate financial OPSEC. It just remarks on how good a bargainer you are, or gives another possible buyer an idea of how hard he can bargain for the same purchase.

LOL, you people are severely serious!
I just do not feel (IMO--that's what counts here ) those questions merit any answers. They're not asking to go and bargain their own Corvette payments! They're NOSY! HATE nosi-ness.
Why? Brought up that way.
I always just say, well, you can look it up cus it varies.
If they persist, it's BYE-BYE!!!

As far as touching!!! Since I would never even think of touching anyone's car, much less my OWN, I am not hesitant about being *rude* back to them. I politely say, "Please don't touch the car". That's it, if they insist or scoff, I just leave.
We don't have to put up with rudeness and it shows the young people there that we respect our own and others property.
I see your point but, the list price is public knowledge so I have no problem sharing cost information.

And yet another non-answer akin to "because I said so".

They're not asking to go and bargain their own Corvette payments!
And you know this how? Maybe the guy would seriously consider buying a vette if he finds out it's not 100's thousands of $$$...

When I bring my corvette to a show (and I try to do this every chance I get over the last 15 years+), it helps me put up with going to work everyday. I do it for 2 reasons. First is that I am very proud of my car and want to show it off. Secondly, I want other people to see my car. 90% of the shows I go to are not NCCC shows and therefore there are a lot of people who have questions about the corvette in general. I enjoy answering questions about my C7 and even if they are interested, talk about all of the prior corvettes. I love it when a child will gaze at it in awe, and I think nothing of letting them sit in it to hopefully begin the start a spark. If somebody wants to know what I paid for it, I tell them. Doesn't bother me in the least. Most of the time they just smile. So that's why I enjoy going to any type of car show with my Corvette. In fact, there's an open class show I'm going to tomorrow. I believe that all of my 7 previous corvettes were made to be enjoyed..driven..and sometimes admired. So can't wait for tomorrow to put a smile on some little ones face.

And who the frick cares? I do not obviously.
non-answer--

Also, I'm not talking about being in a show or going to a show in the Vette (we do not do this). Obviously, one would answer queries (if not rude in OUR book, again, that's all that matters), that's what you'd be there for!!
I'm talking about strangers as the OP was saying, that's what started this whole thing.
I do NOT care if someone is going to buy a Vette, don't ask me personal/rude questions. I would've already given you an answer "you can look it up, it varies" if asked the rude "Heyyyy, what'd ya pay for this thang?"
Period.

Funny story here, so my son has special needs and I enrolled him in Special Olympics soccer and took him to his first practice this week. Anyone who knows special needs kids knows they say exactly what they think, no filter at all and it can be really funny or totally embarrassing. So ths one guy on the team was like 28 yrs old, he has disabilities though.

So as about 30 adults (parents) are standing around waiting for practice to start and he says, who has the red Stingray in the parking lot. I raised my hand and he starts asking questions, rapid fire. What year, is it a Z06, how much did it cost. So everyone is looking at me and Im just trying to keep up w/him w/ basic answers and he says this. "I was looking at the cars out there and was like, piece of crap, piece of crap, piece of crap, rich guy!, piece of crap, piece of crap." Most people start laughing and I just kind of wanted to not be there lol. It was funny but so awkward. I could just feel the stares from everyone.

I am sure most of us dont consider ourselves rich, we may be fortunate to have made or make more money that some other people and I dont ever want someone to look at me like I see myself as better than someone else so its tough when someone says that. That is exactly what I said too, I just work hard as I love fun cars.

We are all Corvette people who enjoy owning, driving , and admiring each other's cars. When someone wants to classify you or demean your Corvette their opinion is based on some unfortunate personality trait.

You still fail to define WHY you consider it rude.

I've driven more POS cars than not, there's still just no reason to lean on or touch them, but I guess it's slightly more forgivable.

I've let a number of well-behaved kids sit in my convertible for photo ops. Why? Because I see the twinkle of car lust in their young eyes and frankly, the more kids that get into cars the better. I wish my folks were into cars but they weren't; I developed the bug myself. When the kids' eyes light up and a big smile crosses their face when I tell them that they are actually getting to sit in a cool car, well, that is planting the seeds for the future of high performance automobiles. My "social service"!!
