Corvette etiquette question
#141
In a word - NO. Because we also live in a country where you can't stop me from asking questions. It's not badgering people - it's asking a question. Questions seem to be hard for you to answer but that's your problem - not mine. If you don't want to respond then simply don't respond. It's as simple as that. I will stop when I get a reasonable answer, and not before.

But is someone else's true character shining through when they ask a complete stranger a question that is a bit personal, private and really none of their business when it comes right down to it? Really, if they are going to ask you how much you paid for it they may as well ask if you paid cash or if you financed it, and if so how much were the payments. If you paid cash would they be rude by asking if you saved up the money or inherited it. Where is the line crossed? The entire inquisition crosses the line as far as I am concerned once a stranger asks me how much my car costs.

I've asked what people paid for a Vette and other cars when I'm interested and I've had some ask me what I paid for mine. If I know the individual, I have no problem sharing that information. Most of the time they are quite surprised at how low the price is expecting a much higher price. The price of your car is something you brag about when you got a good deal so I'm a little surprised at the responses here, but I do understand that with anything financial, someone may want to keep it confidential.
As for did I pay cash or a loan, they don't ask and if they did it's none of their business.
Someone brought up what did you pay for your house. Well, uh, if you live in North Carolina you can tell them or they can go to the county records and ask them, it's a matter of public record along with the closing date and current taxes. Actually, I think it's available on line.
As for income, I agree, that's considered confidential.

I just looked on Zillow and it says what we paid for our house nearly 20 years ago. Lots of ways to get that info, but what you paid for a car is "personal" or "confidential" info.
Kinda like people that blur their license plate when they post a pic when they drive around having no clue who is looking at it.

I haven't bothered reading all the responses but who cares if someone knows what YOU paid for the car. Big deal. Unless I'm negotiating a sale of something (where knowing what I paid can be used as leverage) who cares...oooh I paid XXX amount.

No it has nothing to do with that. Given my social security number you can impersonate me and rip me off. You can't if I tell you how much I paid for my vette. Given you my Medicare or Credit Card numbers you could rip me off. You can't if I tell you how much I paid for my vette. To totally, absolutely opposite concepts. Not even in the ballpark. Stupid comparison. Try again!

It doesn't matter, and I could give a crap what somebody paid for their car. If they got a great deal, good for them. If they didn't, they have the car so it still doesn't matter. As its been pointed out it's pretty easy to get an idea what a new car costs. Easy enough that if someone is curious why don't they just bite their tongue and pull out their phone and do a search rather than ask a complete stranger what THEY paid? I think that it demonstrates bad manners to ask.

If you want, answer the question and tell them what you paid. If you don't want to answer then dont.. This is a personal preference ..and in this thread no one is obligated under any circumstances to explain to anyone else WHY they do or don't answer that particular question.

It's all about the odds of having your identity compromised.
