Love 'em. The exhaust note on start up is like a symphony to my ears .........

It caused by unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust system and a function of ECU programming.

Jaguar has programmed the ECU in the F-Type to inject a little extra fuel upon throttle closure. The snap, crackle, pop exhaust sounds in both the V6 and V8 F-Types have become legendary and mentioned in every review of that car. It's one of the most popular features. By contrast, the C7 is tame.

It is unburnt fuel entering the exhaust and burning up. Basically a tiny explosion in your exhaust rather than the combustion chamber. It's normal. all cars do it, on most you just can't hear it.

Jag actually tunes some of its cars to do it on purpose.

Then can someone explain why it does this popping sound (at WOT) in sport and track modes only? Why would tour mode have any difference in engine combustion? I do love it, but do not understand why sport or track mode is making the different sound.

Someone mentioned it's the performance shift kicking in. I thought that simply keeps the transmission in the correct gear for acceleration for X amount of time. Nothing to do with engine or exhaust.

It doesn't do it in sport and track only. I mostly drive around in tour and it will do it in that mode add well. Either when you jump into performance shift mode or when paddle shifting. Happens at the 1-2 shift for sure and sometimes the 2-3.

Then I'm speaking of a completely different sound.

A backfire sound when the car is under WOT. When the vehicle shifts to the next gear I hear a backfire sound in the exhaust at that exact moment. The vehicle absolutely does not have this same sound in Tour mode under WOT. And yes the valves are open during Tour mode also so it's not the muffler valves.

Yes, that sound. Mine will do that in tour mode as well.

The AMG Mercedes and Jag v8's do it much better than the C7 does. But still it's totally normal. In the future i'm sure they will tune it out due to folks continuing to go to the dealers thinking they have issues.

This is such a relief to me as well. I've only noticed the popping when in Sport mode and I stomp on the pedal. I've never noticed it in Tour mode, and I've never yet had it in Track mode. I planned to call the dealership to ask about this.

This forum is so AWESOME.

Yea, if you're expecting it to happen with normal Auto shifting, it won't. You need to be shifting with the paddle shifters or at least in the performance shift mode.

If you all are talking about the bark when it shifts at WOT, then it's due to a momentary cut-off of fuel to facilitate faster shifts.

It will do it in all modes, but it is harder to achieve when in Tour because of the throttle progression. When in M, it is easier because you can hold the shift a little longer for a higher RPM.

Thanks for this responce.. now it makes more sense why in Tour mode the noise is less noticeable
