Hung up on upgrading from a 5. The 7s are noticeably smaller inside. For such a long car compared to boxster/cayman, surprised there isn't more room in the cabin.

I'm 6'1" and I have the competition seats and can wear a helmet comfortably, but there really isn't any headroom left, nor much legroom to spare.

It's subjective.
Obviously seat position is subjective. I like to sit much farther back than most. Just surprised to see how tight the cabin was in general too. The lambo murci style divider between the driver and passenger doesn't swam to help either.

I take it from your comment, you don't have a problem fitting, just the size of the cabin is smaller. Could be (compared to the C5). Last Vette I owned as a C4 about 20 years ago, so I don't recall how different the cabin sizes are.
I find the C7 to be roomy enough (6' 1.5" @ 180) and don't feel squeezed at all. We are all built differently so you may have a different experience.
If personal size isn't an issue, it likely just a matter of acclimation to the new design. Really is quite comfortable w/ plenty of cargo room for a 2 seater IMO.

6'3", 225. Adequate room for me. MUCH easier to get in/out than a C4, not noticeably different than my C6. My 67, with the big steering wheel, still works pretty well. Those doors are shorter, too, by far.

I have not found the C7 to be "too small".
I track my car, with a helmet, and have found it to be OK.
I have comp. seats and found them a bit narrow through the upper back supports.
My previous '07 Z06 was roomier but I like the interior and feel of the C7 Z51 better.
Enjoy...

Can't talk about the C6, but I am sure it's like the C5.
C7, I have no problems at all.

I am 6'2" 185. I have a Z06 with the comp seats and transparent roof. You have a little more headroom with the transparent roof AND it also allows you to look through the roof rather than trying to squeeze down and look through the windshield at some of the poorly placed traffic signals. It is a very comfortable fit for me and I have done several 600+ mile one day drives.
I bought one of the suction cup attachment liners to use inside the transparent roof for hot days but it hasn't been out of its shipping bag yet. The tint of the roof combined with AC and ventilated seats keeps it very comfortable including a couple of trips to the sunny south during this past summer.

Buy a convertible, it won't be an issue...in the summer.
I'm 6'4" and 250 and I think it's a tight fit. I do have a convertible and I sat in a hardtop before I bought my '16 Z. I didn't think the hardtop model would have worked for me. I don't think I've got room to wear a helmet with the top up.

Fit depends on proportions. Seated height varies considerably within a given overall height. I am 6'1" and have a 31 to 32 inch inseam. My seated height is higher than a 6'1" person with longer legs. For me, there is not a lot of head room in a C7. When I went to Spring Hill, I did not fit with a helmet and the standard roof. They put a clear roof on my car and the helmet was just touching the top.

I'm 6'2", 240, 32" inseam.... most height in upper body. I like the seat forward, so I can depress clutch pedal to the floor. I tilt the front of the seat all the way up and incline forward. Once I started wearing a helmet, I had to lower the incline to give head room for helmet. Now I drive it in this position to get used to it. But I prefer less incline.
