2018 Corvette ZR1 Shows Off Its Huge Rear Wing Up Close
#23
Are you kidding?
You honestly think downforce only matters at speeds at or around 170mph? Hell at that speed the drag created by a wing this size should be damn near topping you out. Downforce can absolutely be felt and useful at 75mph speeds on track.
But I digress. Back to my original undisputed point, the rest of your C7 is just as functional as your Camry for getting groceries. That doesn't mean it's dumb just because you don't use it.

Is like to see them offer the car with a subtle spoiler and the big spoiler...maybe no cost options. The big ones do nothing unless you are tracking the car.

Not true. Porsche GT3 and GT3 RS have wings. Lamborghini Aventadore SV has a wing. ETC....

Pro
Lamborghini Huracan Superleggera (spied with huge wing)
Porsche GT3 RS
Porsche GT4
What do they all have in common? They're the top dog of their respective model and have large wings.
People don't like it? They can buy a Stingray, GS, Z06 or remove it themselves.

And yet somehow the 200 mph Italian and German Supercars don't seem to feel the need for them on their street versions even though their performance is comparable.

I personally would never aspire to own a vehicle with large rear wings like what is being shown. I'm sure will and I wish GM the best of luck. I am sure they will sell everyone they produce.
Would be nice if they offered two versions...one with these large aero wi gas etc and one with just an aero undercarriage device....much like what Porsche is doing with the 911r...
I would imagine a lot of vandalism anytime a rear wi g package would be left alone on the street...this type of wing just incites vandalism....jmo

The ZR1 will be a track focused car as it should be, not a street cruiser. Same goes for the Viper ACR, and i'm betting the ZR1 is aimed right at the ACR. I'm also betting the bulk of clientele buying the ACR could give 2 chits about the looks of the wing versus how much massive downforce it provides them around the fast corners.

The two Corvettes with the lower height spoiler looked much better IMO. I could live with that look. The higher spoiler just doesn't do it for me.

Safety Car
Don't mind it as long as it's actually beneficial instead of a prop, and on this car it sure would be. Might even end up on a poster . . . e.g. Lamborghini Countach

It depends on the total aerodynamic package of the car and how they want to achieve downforce (or reduce drag on the opposite end) and how much. Plenty, if not most supercars have functional large wings or spoilers (many mechanical that raise/lower). See the P1, Veyron, Viper ACR, 918, GT3, GT2, GT4, LaFerrari has a super large mechanical spoiler as does the McLaren 675LT, most race cars on planet earth, etc. And if they don't as standard, they offer an aero package that does like in the case with many Lamborghinis.

I think they (GM) are truly taking a page out of the Porsche playbook. They've already done the really expensive R&D and made a great platform (C7). Now, just keep taking the performance up (with the resultant price increase) and then look at the profitability. A Porsche GT3 RS certainly doesn't COST Porsche $90,000 more than a Carrera, but that's what they charge for it.

You might be right, but the ACR remains the car to beat (going out of production or not) and is the perfect execution of a budget supercar that can achieve amazing times spending as little money possible to do so (ie: just add crazy aero, sticky tires, and watch it dominate).

Can't wait for this rig to debut. Track focused aero and added cooling capacity. This will be the most capable Corvette produced (up to this point).

I think this will be awesome. The more like the race car they can make the 'top of the line' performance car the better.
Oh, and when can I get this rear diffuser? That looks is cool too.
Edit: put in real picture of the C7R, not the rendering.
