Default Theft deterrent notification

I have had three recent notifications from OnStar that the theft deterrent was activated on my 2016 Z06 convertible. This has been confirmed by the vehicle's horn sounding three times upon entering the car as well as the dash notification. The vehicle has shown absolutely no sign of tampering on each occasion. On each occasion it has been parked on a military facility in clear view.

The interesting thing is that a coworker who was parked next to me said he heard my alarm go off when he started his car. He said he has a poor muffler that is very loud and has set off other car alarms when he has parked in a parking garage. I assume from this that the vibration trips the theft deterrent motion sensors.

Has anyone else heard of this or had it happen to them? Does anyone know if there is a way to change the sensitivity of the motion sensors on the Z06's theft deterrent system?

I don't know of any sensitivity setting on the alarm.

I have seen this on other cars where a loud noise sets off the alarm.
Has not happened to me.

Is there anything inside your car that might be moving at all (maybe from a breeze from a cracked window)? I say this because the inside motion sensor in my car has triggered the alarm multiple times when I run in a convenience store with my dog in the car. Just a thought.

A few weeks ago I was parked in a parking garage for 6 or 7 hours. We all know that sweet pop on start-up when the car is dead cold. A Mustang Saleen (a nice one too I might mention) was parked perpendicular to the back of my car about 15/20' away. On my start-up; his alarm went off. I had heard that this could happen, but on this occasion I saw it first hand. My guess is your coworkers car if it's LOUD and close could very well set off your alarm.

Not a big fan of the theft deterrent system. My car was parked but not locked in the garage overnight like usual and one morning I get the 3 horns and a message. This system is pure baloney.

It's usually the frequency of the noise that can cause vibrations which set off alarms.

No, car windows are fully up and the sunshade was in exactly the same position it was left in. Thanks.

I have also parked my vette on a military base when I go to work. There's a lot of noise like sonic booms arty etc.Half the time my alarms been set off. I wouldn't worry about it.

I had a couple false alarms that baffled me, later concluded I had probably bumped the panic button on the key fob in my pocket.

Frankly I get a little embarrassed when the horn beeps 3 time in the work parking lot for no reason when I open the door. Seems the sensor is too sensitive.

OP, try a test.
Arm the car, place your fobs far away, shake the car.
Did the alarm go off.
If so, then you may have some leads as to why it "blasts".

I am unsure if there is an alarm sensitivity adjustment.
One could also check all the alarm connectors to ensure they are tightly installed throughout the car.

Good luck.

Solved the problem by just turning off the motion sensor when parked at work. Thanks for all the response.

Have had that warning several times when my radar detector let loose from the windshield. Fortunately has a tether made from a thin stainless fishing leader that catches it so it only drops a few inches. Enough to cause it to trip the theft detector.

No big deal in 3 years has happened ~4 times. Now I know what it is.
