Default Helpful if you change your own oil

I have both a Volt and 2014 C7. The drain plug on C7 is 15mm and Volt is 10mm. 10mm is real small and rounded the darn thing with a socket. Ask Mechanics at two dealerships and they never use socket to remove drain plugs - only box wrench. Tried to find 6 point box wrench. I tried Snap-on, Matco, Internet though numerous sites. Everyone had only 12 point box wrench. I got 6 point box 10mm and 15mm online at Sears website. Changed oil on C7 today. Works great. Fits tight and not too long or too short. It is $9.48. No more sockets for me. See link below.

I use 6-point sockets on mine with no issues.

Forget using any wrench.....I have used these on my last two cars and bike and they are excellent.

I installed one of these on my C7 last oil change and will get to use it for the first time after this upcoming track day Friday.

Ordered 2 more, 1 for my G8 and 1 for my Sierra, and will install them next oil change. The truck is coming due.

I'd be concerned about clearance on the dry sump cars. You screw in the valve and then cap it? To drain you remove the cap and insert the quick connect with hose that starts the draining?

There are plenty of 6 point 15mm 3/8" drive sockets available for under $10.00.

These are much better than a wrench.

I use 6 point sockets whenever I can. 12 point is a last resort.

I used these up until the deep socket twisted on me. My point is next time you are in a dealership ask the mechanic what they use. There is a reason to use a box wrench. Granted it happened on small 10mm but when you are under a car the elbow room is a problem. I don't have a lift.

My Cruze has a 10 mm drain plug. I use a good ol' Craftsman 6 pt socket without any issue. I also torque mine to specification when installing the plug. I suspect that you're not torquing the drain plug during the install and have been overtightening it, which makes it more difficult to remove and is causing you to round the head????

How could it twist? There should be no gap to allow it. Did you use the right size? I don't know why a wrench would work better...

You're right - also bought small torque wrench.

Exactly what I was under. Bought the ramps back in 2014 when I bought the car.

Do it...I bought a set and love them. I use them to change my oil. I used them to install my headers. I use them with my other cars. I didn't initially like shelling out the money for them, but now that I've used them, I don't regret it one bit.

Again, this was the very small 10mm plug. I did not have a problem with C7 plug. You need to see one to understand. I never had a problem with sockets on larger 15mm plugs. After getting the box 6 point I simply like it better. I had 12 point but did not want to use that. Just a suggestion use whatever.

Agree...you have to see the 10mm plug to believe it. I've seen larger drain plugs on riding mowers
