Not really. USB supports both power and communication in iPhones, but older iPods only produced sound through the ear phone jack, and charged through the USB port via an older style connector. I think that all changed when they switched to the "lightning" connectors on the iPhone 5.

Seems most people don't care about sound quality anymore. Or maybe they never did. The sound quality on a memory stick is crap. I saved 3 or 4 of those CD walkmans for a reason.😃 Just get a patch cord to aux to player and enjoy.😃

I realize at this point it's not going to happen BUT I wish the CD player was optional on the C7. People like me who want a Cd player would at least be able to have one.

You do understand that MP3 and other digital files have quality based on how recorded. MP3s can be anywhere from 32kpbs (crap) to 302kpbs (CD quality). Your Walkman is unlikely to be better than 256kbps (which is what most sensible people rip music at).

Not entirely correct. Since the elimination of FireWire as the primary connection in iPods analog and then digital audio was available over USB. Most older non-lightning devices only have the analog channel which new systems don't support. Some of the early lightning and some of the later 30-pin connectors have both analog and digital line out channels.

Some people just refuse to understand.

yes, this MIGHT even turn on and play, but unfortunately there's a big difference between a home, desktop CD player and a player designed for vehicle installation, movement of desktop CD players basically renders them inoperable.

Witch hunt,

I was just kidding. Obviously, a $19 CD player isn't a solution anyone would want.

I'm happy to have banished my CD collection to boxes in the basement, and I have all of them I'm halfway still interested in listening to on my iPhone. None of my current fleet has a CD player, and I don't miss them.

Could link to the useful information on how to create USB sticks with Playlists.

That's a big pile of editorial arrogance right there. I see now why the tone of this forum is so often toxic; it starts at the top.

Actually, the older 30-pin connector does pass audio. That's how you got audio to most of the sound docks back in the day. I'm using my old iPod Classic with the connecter and it works fine.

That said, the OP didn't want to get into a debate on CD vs. ripped media and I believe his question was answered in post #9. An alternative is the Sony Car Discman D-180K Portable CD Player. It has a line-level output which is the connection that gives the best quality.

I cant remember if anyone cared when they phased out 8 Tracks or cassettes. Time marches on and things change. I honestly cant remember the last time I bought much less inserted a cd. Although I do have a 99 Taurus wagon that I use for business that I will pop an Iron Maiden Cassette in once in a while.

Interesting, the older 30-pin connector doesn't work in the USB port of my car. The only way I can make it play music is through the earphone jack to aux port. It does charge the iPod Mini I'm using, but that's it.
