Default Flying Roof Club - How many?

Let's hear your story:

How many are part of this club? And how many think losing their roof will never happen to them? Distractions are the #1 reason this "club" exists.

I'm a part of the club, and I want to put an end to it! It's embarrassing, costly and dangerous!

If a driver is so "distracted" before they get in the car, one can only imagine what level of concentration they possess while they're actually driving? They deserve membership into the club. Just don't take an innocent down along the way.

I recommend not relying on "hope". No one ever wants to join that club... There are so many stories that start with... "I forgot..." or "I got distracted somehow..."

Hasn't happened to me, but I did the equivalent back around 1966 with my Triumph TR-3. Neglected to properly latch down the hood which proceeded to fly up, break the hinges off and land in the road behind me.

To the OP: I didn't realize you were posting for a product. Cool idea. Should help keep membership down a bit.

I bought a peel-off caution stripe decal like this, cut them into quarter-inch strips, and put them on the "open" side of my old C5's front handles. You can't see them when the handles are in the closed position.

Might try something similar with the GS.

I had one fly off from a C5 I test drove at a dealership one time. The previous salesman took it off for a test ride, put it back on the car and failed to secure it. Not my problem.

I'm so scared this will happen to me that I make sure I DOUBLE check everything each time I put the roof back on. And I do take it off pretty frequently in nice weather.

Default Twice....not me....

I had a buddy (may he rest in peace) who had it happen to him twice on his C6. I guess he was just forgetful. I am very careful when I put the roof back on. I don't let anything distract me when doing so.

Happy New Year everyone!

I have a Convertible now so no worry! However, I have had several Corvette Coupes C3,(T-Tops) C4, C5, C6 and my previous C7. Never had a problem with a flying roof. I always made sure to latch or bolt them in ...circa C4.

Impressive! This has become mostly relevant to the C5 and newer, since the tool went away and the quick release handle took over.

It's a completely different level of distraction. That's like saying if you lose your wallet, you should buy anything... or if you lose your keys, you shouldn't drive.

my wife is.. moved our 98 C5 with the fiberglass targa top just sitting in place, about 20 mph it went whoosh and tried to fly.. (it failed) and cracked the front of it. I replaced it with a transparent top I got on Ebay.

I have never had it happen but upon reading the post here I am always nervous about it! I do have one advantage, I drive a truck with ladders on it. I have made a very conscious point of always and I mean always tying the ladders down every time as I put them on. I have seen many people place the ladder then put tools away, talk to someone etc then drive away with the ladder unsecured, and that can well kill somebody!!! Thanks to the post on this matter on the forum, I will always treat my roof as I do my ladders............I hope.

I had the pleasure two years ago with my Night Race Blue.
Pulled onto the interstate and heard extreme wind noise and
before I could look up it flew off going 50mph. Put the top
on the night before and did not latch it. Lucky it floated like
a frisky and landed on the paint side. Scratches sanded and
a repaint cost $496.00 . Lucky it did not chip or crack.
