Default Summer run flats ride is worse in Winter/better in Summer?

Have a 16 Sting Ray . Purchased Sept 1. Recently in colder weather 42 or less degrees..seems not to ride as good as when temp was 65-70. Any comments on this?

Never had a chance to find out. Changed to all season non-run flats shortly after my purchase. Have never regretted the move. Actually, my new tires ride much better than the Michelins.

Best bang for your buck:

All tires run harder in the winter. Doesn't matter whether they are run flats or not. Once the tire is driven some distance at a reasonable speed tire carcass flexing will build heat due to friction and the carcass will return to its softer version. By the way the Michelin Run Flats that come on the car only have a stiffener in the inner side wall. The outer side wall has no stiffener so the tire can corner better.

The OEM run flats are amazing in warm weather (stick like glue), but at the very least need to be treated gingerly in cold weather.

I live in the mid- atlantic region, and have another car (my C6 with A/S tires to drive when it gets below freezing, but I use this car above freezing temps when dry, and play it safe with both acceleration and following distance. Today, it was 60F, so why would I want to lose the warm weather grip for the few times when I have to play it easy?

Because you still have more grip on AS3+ all seasons at 60ºF, than you do on the PSS. You have to get close to 80ºF for the PSS to exhibit more grip.

That's why you need two sets.

Default Run flaTs vs non

I was thinking of buying all season tires but can't decide between run flats or non. I keep pointing towards run flaTs because if you get a flat you can still drive to a tire shop or dealer. Any pros for non flaTs?

More options in the non-run flats I think is the biggest reason.

My first Corvette was a 2000 C5 when run flats where very stiff. Every car since I have moved to non run flat tires. Currently running Contis. There is a marked differnce in better ride and reduced noise level with regular tires and its not a big deal but when turning the achermann(?) effect is gone. The latest Michelins run flats are vast improvements from the 1st generation run flats but still do not compare to a modern regular tire.

I carry a bag with a compressor, low level jack, and plug kit. As a back up carry some fix a flat if you wish. Could damage the sensor but if it gets you going so what. Knock on wood have never had to use it.

Just a question, but thought there is still an outer sidewall stiffener, but only thinner than the inner one

OP, the OEM runflat tires have a stiff sidewall compared to a non run flat.

I decided to nitrogen fill the tires when the car was new. They did not need to lift the car to do this as the runflat sidewall is stiff enough that when they evacuated the tires , no air at all, the tire looked no different than when filled with the car sitting on the ground.

When I switched over to Michelin NON RUN FLAT AS/3+ tires I noticed a softer ride in both the colder fall weather up north ( 35* F) and the warmer weather here in Florida.

Lots of threads on tire comparison and for me the NON RUN FLAT Michelin's did the following:

No crowhopping/scrubbing at wheel lock slow speed turns
Does not pick up and throw gravel nearly as much as the OEM's
No cold weather cracking restrictions
Not as much loss of traction/braking in the colder temperatures
Somewhat quieter ride

Welcome to the Forum .

You forgot less traction and responsiveness.

Yeah, but as my wife says " I drive the car like a little girl" so I guess I don't need the High Performance benefits of the OEM run flats.

Have not been out to YYC in a few years.....any sign of spring yet?

You've definitely been on the wrong side of the jet stream's dip this year, my friend. Here in the mid-Atlantic, we've stayed on the good side for most of the winter, which has been he warmest in the last 4-5 years. It was 73ºF here today.
