How many people could have been fed for the money that Corvette cost
(Some may have read this already)
From a post on FB:
A guy looked at my Corvette the other day and said I wonder how many people could have been fed for the money that car cost.
I replied I am not sure, it fed a lot of families in Bowling Green, Kentucky who built it, it fed the people who make the tires, it fed the people who made the components that went into it, it fed the people in the copper mine who mined the copper for the wires, it fed people in Decatur IL. at Caterpillar who make the trucks that haul the copper ore. It fed the trucking people who hauled it from the plant to the dealer and fed the people working at the dealership and their families.
BUT,... I have to admit, I guess I really don't know how many people it fed.
I especially like the fact that this was brought to my attention by my son, and is being circulated by him and his friends at work and college.

There is a large (and still growing) number of people in this republic who believe that ALL "charity" and good works must only come from the benevolent state. They'd rather someone be poor & dependent than to gain wealth via hard work, careful investing, discipline or other "non-governmental" means.
To many of them, a social program is morally superior to a job & a good economy.
P.S. I saw this on Facebook a few times recently and remember it from a few years ago when it referred to a new Harley-Davidson rather than a Corvette.

Yeah I actually saw that a while back on Linkedin, of all places.

I did get a question from a guy in his early 20's recently, where he asked me how I have such a nice car. I said I have a stressful job and I work. Funny thing is, in a lot of peoples minds these are expensive cars, and they are, but honestly they're just scratching the surface of what's achievable in the grand old USA.

Good answer... accurate & to the point.
Funny how these types *never* ask similar questions when one of their own flies around the world in a private jet -- adding up the per hour cost of fuel and private jet aircraft rental for a single "vital" trip to a Global Warming conference in Europe would more than cover the cost of a single Corvette.
Don't believe me? Check out the cost of chartering a private small-to-midsize business jet USA->Europe sometime. Privatefly.com has, on their webpage right now, a price for a single round-trip private charter flight LA->London->LA of $160,000 for a Gulfstream G2 (the G2 is one of the smallest jets of the popular Gulfstream business class fleet)
Hypocrites.

What they are not understanding is how many it fed by BUYING that Corvette....The workers at the plant...the suppliers and their workers, the local food, restaurants, gas stations and all the other business's that are located in Bowling Green...not to mention the dealership that sells it and the salesmen, mechanics and all the other people they support....Yeah...I wonder how many people it would feed....

I've received comments in parking lots getting in or out of the car. Each time, I've looked around and said, "I can pick out at least a half dozen cars that cost more than this one." They're usually dumbfounded by the remark.

Here is the other thing I tell people...
I give 40% of my income every year to charity by paying federal and state income tax! Isn't that enough? How much do you give?
End of story!

If we had to give all my extra money to charity rather than enjoy it, there would be a lot more starving people.
While capitalism creates massive disparities in income, it is still better for 90% of people.

Someone that asks a question like that leads me to question how much he contributes to solving world problems or just how jealous he is that he hasn't done better in life to where he could afford the car. Between what I pay in taxes that goes to social programs and what we give in charity each year, I figure we are doing our part.

How are you at 60% before that stuff? Highest federal tax bracket is 39.6% Do you have some sort of 35% state income tax?
edit: or are you saying 40% is the short answer?
Yeah with property tax, sales tax, etc, I'm probably hovering around 50%

How many people could the Vatican feed if they unleashed their real estate holdings and converted them into cash?
How many people could all the other churches feed if they sold their buildings and land and held services in a tent or rented facility?

If you are asking me, 40% is the short answer I give to make it simple for people to understand. And that is the combined tax bracket %. Add all the rest of the taxes on top of that.
