Default Brake rotors rusting

I have a 2015 Z51 and enter a lot of car shows. One of the things Im bug'd about is how the center of the rotors are rusted! It really takes away from the clean detail of the wheel assembly and barrel. I was told that the standard Stingray has a treatment on there rotors and explains why I have never seen this problem with the base model. So why would the base unit have a treatment and the Z51 option not?? Any solution short of having to replace the rotors.

The only ones I've ever seen w/ rusted rotors are cars that are washed and left to sit. I certainly don't see it on my Z51 which is driven 4-5 days a week. Use the brakes and the rust is gone.

I've seen people paint that hub.

Check out:http://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe...ticle11408699/

So this is what the base rotors have that the Z51 rotors don't.

Ferritic Nitro-Carburized-treated rotors(a chemical case-hardening process whereby nitrogen and carbon are diffused into the surface of a ferrous metal such as steel or cast iron.) have a 400-micron (one-tenth the width of a human hair) layer of protection. Once this layer is worn through, the cast iron rotor can be treated like a normal one and machined if necessary.

Because the pads on the Z51 are more abrasive than the base pads, they would wear through the thin coating too quickly for it to be worth the cost of doing.

Yep, that's the price of stopping more quickly.

What I am talking about is the center of the rotor where the fins are! Not the face. The face will always be clean from the breaks.

I lived with that problem on my 2009 Acura for six years. A year ago I painted them with "Majic Rust Kill", described on the can "as an oil-base aluminum rust-preventive coating, for metal substrates only." Before painting I cleaned them as well as I could with a wire brush and air jet. They still looked rusty, but the paint has held up perfectly in that time. It's not a big job if I have to redo it after a while. It came in a half-pint can ($4.59) and I probably have 80-90% of it left. It is a bright aluminum color, and I am happy with the look. (My Acura wheels are aluminum; for black wheels you would no doubt want black paint.) No need to remove rotors from car to do this job.

Not always, the Z51 rotors rust after you wash the car and before you can put the hose away.

The entire "base" rotor is baked so the center gets the coating also. The Z51 has no coating.

Base rotors after washing.

Yes, they rust. Use some caliper paint on them. This is the G2 system applied. A bit pricey but seems to hold up good for me. Use a rust remover with a wire brush to get the rust off. Even some household CLR will do it if the wife has it around. You have to let it dry a while so be prepared to leave it up on jack stands overnight.

OK, but that's not the rotor.

?? I think it is. He's talking about the internal fins that you see between the inside and outside brake surface.

I haven't noticed "rusting" on any of mine.

I guess we're just differing on terminology. To me the rotor is the part that comes in contact w/ the brake pads.

I think he's talking about the rotors "hat" (or even the edge of he disc) which is most certainly a part of the rotor. It's just not the part of the rotor which is used to stop. The whole part is called a rotor, not just the disc.

Below is a related thread with regards to the rusty "hat." There's only a thin layer gray paint, which can wear off... and some wheel cleaners can removed the paint exposing the metal resulting in rust.

I painted the center hub area, or hat, with rustoleum black and the cooling vanes around the perimeter with rustoleum silver. I like the hub area being black because it makes the rotor surfaces stand out more.
