Default Magnetic ride versus non-magnetic ride

I'm trading my C6 in for a C7 Z 51. I'm looking for a used one so my selection is somewhat limited. I found a beautiful Z 51 loaded. It just does not have magnetic ride control. I hear the primary difference is that the magnetic ride control provides a smoother ride. I'm not too concerned with a smooth ride because my daily driving car is a luxury sedan so if I want a smooth ride I'll use that. I hear that the suspension in the Z 51 is stiffer than the magnetic ride control. Having said that, is the performance with the Z 51 better than the magnetic ride control? I'm not really concerned with the cost as the magnetic ride is only an $1800 option so it can't drive the cost of a preowned c7 up too much. I've had a hard time finding a preowned C7 with the magnetic ride control. I was able to negotiate a good deal on this one. My question is should I keep looking for a C7 with magnetic ride or just buy this one? I'm more concerned with performance than ride comfort

If you are interested in performance, then you should not forgo the MSRC. Performance Traction Management is only available and included with MSRC equipped Z51's.

Performance Traction
Management (Z51 with
Magnetic Selective Ride
Control)
Performance Traction Management
(PTM) integrates the Traction
Control, StabiliTrak, and Selective
Ride Control systems to provide
improved and consistent
performance when cornering. The
amount of available engine power is
based on the mode selected, track
conditions, driver skill, and the
radius of each corner.
This light is on when the vehicle is
in the PTM mode.
To select this optional handling
mode, the vehicle mode must be
Track. Then quickly press the TCS/
StabiliTrak g button on the center
console two times. PERF TRAC 1 -
WET ACTIVE HANDLING ON
displays in the DIC.
To experience the performance
benefit of this system, after entering
a curve and at the point where
normal acceleration occurs, fully
press the accelerator pedal. The
PTM system will modify the level of
engine power for a smooth and
consistent corner exit.

To select a mode while in PTM, turn
the Selective Ride Control/
Performance Traction Management
MODE SELECT **** on the center
console.
The PTM system contains five
modes. These modes are selected
by turning the Selective Ride
Control/Performance Traction
Management MODE SELECT ****
on the center console. Scroll up or
down through modes 1–5 by turning
the MODE SELECT **** to the
right or left.
The following is a DIC display
description and the recommended
usage of each mode:
PERF TRAC 1 – WET ACTIVE
HANDLING ON
. Intended for all driver skill levels.
. Wet or damp conditions only —
not intended for use in heavy
rain or standing water.
. StabiliTrak is on and engine
power is reduced based on
conditions.
PERF TRAC 2 – DRY ACTIVE
HANDLING ON
. For use by less experienced
drivers or while learning a new
track.
. Dry conditions only.
. StabiliTrak is on and engine
power is slightly reduced.
PERF TRAC 3 – SPORT
ACTIVE HANDLING ON
. For use by drivers who are
familiar with the track.
. Dry conditions only.
. Requires more driving skill than
mode 2.
. StabiliTrak is on and more
engine power is available than in
mode 2.
PERF TRAC 4 – SPORT
ACTIVE HANDLING OFF
. For use by drivers who are
familiar with the track.
. Dry conditions only.
. Requires more driving skill than
modes 2 or 3.
. StabiliTrak is off and available
engine power is the same as
mode 3.
PERF TRAC 5 – RACE ACTIVE
HANDLING OFF
. For use by experienced drivers
who are familiar with the track.
. Dry conditions only.
. Requires more driving skill than
in other modes.
. StabiliTrak is off and engine
power is available for maximum
cornering speed.
Press and release the TCS/
StabiliTrak g button to turn off
Performance Traction Management
and return to the traction control and
StabiliTrak systems. The traction off
light i and StabiliTrak OFF light
will go out.

The Z51 w/ MSRC is both softer and stiffer than the Z51 without depending upon the setting one selects. I wouldn't own a C7 without MSRC.

I own a Z51 with MSRC. Honestly, it was almost a deal breaker for me not having it. Are you buying new or trying to find used? Also I don't know if you are focused on a particular color or option but I know MacMulkin has some new Z51's with MSRC and they have some of the lowest prices out there.

Also have you looked into the Grand Sport? MSRC is standard. You can find 1LT GS's for under $58K brand new.

Even when you are in sport or track mode, the system is analyzing road conditions in real time. If you hit a dip or pothole it will absorb the blow much better compared to non MSRC.

My Z51 did not have mag ride. It's a sports car not a caddy. Was it missing some capabilities, sure, but I never knew it and enjoyed the hell out of it.

I had the predecessor of Mag ride on my C4, and when I got a C6 which did not have that option I missed it dearly. So glad I got it on the C7. It really is a must have.

We've beat this horse many times. What I comes down to is drive the car, a decent test and see for yourself.

I had a 15 Z51 w/o and now a 16 Z with. I track my cars and MR is certainly an advantage on the track. BUT for normal driving I don't need MR.

But we're all different. Take that test drive!

Hey Foosh, how is your DSC going? Installed yet? That will really change the ride and handling characteristics.

Yes, my DSC has been installed since mid-January. It's beyond awesome and takes MSRC to much higher level of sophistication.

MSRC is really not about a softer ride. Although you can set it to that, it's about handling and control at any speed.

I think its a must have.

It wouldn't surprise me one bit if GM initiates talks with Mike Levitas @ TPC Racing/DSC Sport regarding the rights to his intellectual property at some point.

Given the amount of enthusiasm on this forum regarding what a significant enhancement it is over the OEM MSRC controller, I gotta believe it's already gotten GM's attention.

I'm thinking the same thing. Will interesting to see the markup GM will charge from what you paid.
I think it's a no brainer for GM to acquire the rights.

If you're looking for a Z51 and more concerned about Performance, get the MSRC.
Ride is always brought up discussing MSRC and the improved Ride is a nice bi-product of MSRC.
Z51 with MSRC is not a really soft ride by any means but is better than Z51 without it.
MSRC is a Performance Handling option that makes the car more Compliant by keeping the tires on the pavement and car under control.
This applies to rough roads on Track or Street.

Again, if you're concerned about Performance you'll want to check out this thread on the DSC Controller for the OEM MSRC system.

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...ervations.html.

I also have the DSC Controller installed in my Z51 w/MSRC and could not be happier with the Improved Ride and even more Improved Handling.

Either way, don't be too quick to dismiss getting MSRC especially on a Z51.
Good luck with your purchase

Was a deal breaker once I test drove C6's.

And unless I was buying a new stripper 7m car for 45k it was going to have MSRC.

I had a Z51 without the MSRC and it was pretty comfortable, but after buying a z06 with the MSRC there is literally no comparison. It's extremely comfortable when you want it to be, and tight and nimble when you turn to track mode. It's 100% worth the money.

Easy answer, same as most other answers so far. My Camaro doesn't have it, my z51 does. I thought it was all hype until I got it on my vette. I was dead wrong. I would definitely recommend you get this option.
